Formaldehyde

Chen Miemie left the Moon Library in the afternoon and did not return to Sixiang City until 11 p.m.

They would not normally have needed so long, since there was a spatial wormhole that could fold space like paper. However, the meteorite statue could not be folded by it, and using the wormhole would easily cause spatial displacement, resulting in the exit appearing somewhere other than the intended destination.

Along the way, Chen Miemie flew on the broom while the statue sat in a sedan chair.

Today was the sixth day of the week. Once midnight passed, [No Tomorrow] would begin.

South District Building, eighteenth floor.

Chen Miemie emerged from the stairwell, looking travel-worn.

When he had left, the entire floor had been undergoing renovations. The work had finally been completed more than a month ago.

The entire corridor had been painted white, with spotless white floor tiles.

A small red spider—the Red Avatar—crawled out from his shoulder.

“It’s so monotonous. I still need to decorate the ceiling.”

The doors to 1802 and 1804 had vanished. Only the door to 1803 remained on the left. It had been replaced with a grander one, and the old key no longer worked.

Chen Miemie went to 1805 and knocked.

Joker opened the door.

“You’re back already?” Joker was somewhat surprised. Chen Miemie had returned two days earlier than he had announced.

Chen Miemie grinned. “Surprised?”

Joker nodded, acknowledging the “surprise.”

He stepped aside, seemingly inviting Chen Miemie in.

Chen Miemie merely glanced inside. The bare concrete interior had been transformed into a luxurious, fully furnished home.

“I’ll come by another day. I’m going back to my own place first.” Chen Miemie had come to get a new key from Joker.

“Then I’m afraid you’ll have to deal with a small problem first.” Joker spread his hands. “I was planning to take care of it before you came back.”

“What problem?”

“An anomaly was born on this floor. It considers this place its territory. I’ve been fighting it every day for the past week. In a direct confrontation, it’s no match for me, but I can’t kill it either.”

Chen Miemie glanced at his watch.

It was already 11:20 p.m.

“What kind of anomaly?”

Chen Miemie needed to deal with the anomaly that even Joker could not kill within the next forty minutes—whether that meant destroying it, driving it away, or subduing it.

Joker had fought the anomaly many times, so he already had a fairly complete understanding of it.

“It’s called [Formaldehyde]. It’s a gaseous anomaly with no fixed form. Physical attacks are basically useless against it.

“It likes to hide in the gaps between boards, along the edges of veneer, and among curtain fibers. It’s usually colorless, only giving off a faint blue halo in sunlight. That’s the only time it has any color.

“It excels at surprise attacks. The moment someone opens a cabinet, it lunges at their face. The instant they pull open a drawer, it burrows into their nose.

“Its attacks aren’t immediately fatal, but they can cause dizziness, coughing, watery eyes, skin allergies, and corrosion of the lungs.”

After hearing this, Chen Miemie also found the anomaly rather troublesome.

It sounded like the type of anomaly whose attack power was nothing special, but whose [Immortality] was extremely troublesome—somewhat like Black Hole.

Such an anomaly was not deadly, but it was incredibly difficult to deal with.

“If physical attacks are useless, how were you planning to deal with it within two days?”

Joker chuckled.

“I’ve just found its weakness. As long as we ventilate the place thoroughly and get the air flowing throughout the entire floor, we can weaken it. I was planning to find a [Mystic] whose power is wind and have them give the whole floor a complete airing-out.

“If [No Tomorrow] weren’t about to begin, I could simply leave every door on the floor open and let the place breathe.”

Chen Miemie looked puzzled. “So you were just going to stay here and absorb formaldehyde? Become a human air purifier?”

“I’m an anomaly. Formaldehyde can’t hurt me.”

Chen Miemie released the anomalies he was carrying.

“This is Black Hole, this is Jinguo, this is the [Rebel Broom], or simply Broom, and this is Water Gaze, which only appears in water. And this is Joker.” Chen Miemie introduced the unfamiliar faces.

Then he gave them an order.

“Find [Formaldehyde] and bring it to me.”

Joker opened the doors to 1801 and 1803, and the anomalies scattered in every direction.

While they searched for [Formaldehyde], Chen Miemie inspected his “new home.”

The original 1803 had already been well decorated, and its basic layout had not changed. Two passageways had simply been added, connecting it to 1802 and 1804. As a result, the apartment now contained two additional halls and four more bedrooms.

The requirements he had made earlier had all been fulfilled.

The kitchen had been transformed into a larger open-plan space, complete with a massive oven that Bobo would love.

Several bathrooms had been added, one of which contained a huge bathtub that would be perfect for soaking.

One entire wall of the living room had been fitted with display shelves, divided into compartments for showcasing porcelain.

A massive fish tank stood in the entryway, taking up nearly half the wall. Pure Water and Water Gaze would probably love it.

After making a full circuit, Chen Miemie declared himself satisfied.

Joker did not wander around. He had spotted the meteorite statue by the stairwell, and some inexplicable attraction kept him rooted to the spot.

He stopped Bobo, who was passing by and very obviously accomplishing nothing.

“Bobo, what is this statue?”

Bobo raised one chicken wing, indicating, “You eat first. I’ll tell you after you eat.”

Joker tore off the chicken wing and swallowed it quickly, bones and all.

Bobo was not pleased.

“Such delicious food, and you don’t even have an expression of enjoyment on your face. I don’t like you.”

Whether Bobo liked him or not, she still kept her word.

“This is a meteorite Chen Miemie went to great lengths to retrieve from the Eternal Moon, then carved with his own hands. Its name is the [Moon God in Yellow Statue]. Since we are all dependents of the Eternal Moon, we naturally feel close to the statue.”

Joker was shocked.

He was not like the other anomalies around Chen Miemie. Not long ago, he had still been human—and not just any human. He had once served as a bishop of the Mist Church, and possessed a considerable amount of common sense and knowledge. He had also studied certain secrets.

Precisely because he knew these things, he understood exactly what it meant to “retrieve a meteorite from the Eternal Moon.”

To Chen Miemie’s surprise, something happened.

After searching for half an hour, the anomalies in the house still had not found [Formaldehyde].

Joker was not surprised.

“Whenever we fight, it’s always the one that attacks me first. When it wants to hide, even I can’t find it.”

With [No Tomorrow] approaching, Chen Miemie waved his hand.

“Let’s leave it alone for now. Once [No Tomorrow] is over, I’ll ask Teacher Fuxiao to come and help blow [Formaldehyde] out.”

Actually, Chen Miemie and the others were no longer particularly afraid of the mist brought by [No Tomorrow]. They were practically a gathering of anomalies themselves. Still, it was better to be cautious. Unless there was something important to deal with, there was no need to deliberately act recklessly. After all, the unknown [Mystery] deserved respect.

Joker began giving his work report.

“The Mist Church in Sixiang City has been rebuilt. It currently has six members.”

Chen Miemie was not very interested.

“They were troublemakers before and kept doing bad things. Just drive them out—or better yet, eliminate them.”

Joker: “...”

“I’m the new person in charge. They now belong to our faction, and we’ve already taken control of the entire underground world of Sixiang City.”

“You were doing just fine as a ‘Liberation Assistant.’ Why have you come out of retirement?”

“If I don’t do it, the Mist Church will send someone else sooner or later. With me handling it, at least I can keep them from causing trouble.”

Chen Miemie was deeply skeptical. “Wouldn’t you be more likely to cause trouble? And the Mist Church agreed to this?”

“They didn’t agree at first. They changed their minds later.”

“How did you persuade them?”

“They sent three waves of people after me. All of them died. After that, they recognized my status.”

Chen Miemie wasn’t particularly interested in the Mist Church’s influence. “Whatever. As long as you don’t stage any terrorist attacks, I don’t care what else you do. Here.”

Joker took the small box Chen Miemie handed him.

Inside was a yellow stone pocket watch. It was empty inside, with room for a miniature portrait.

The moment he opened the box, he knew what it was made of. It gave off the same faint pull as the giant meteorite statue.

Joker left with a complicated expression, just as the clock struck midnight.

Chen Miemie climbed into her familiar bed, turned over a few times, and soon drifted blissfully into sleep.
