Leaving the City

Chen Miemie’s plans had been disrupted, so he no longer needed to look for an inn.

That entire night, he was kept in Silence’s office, where he and the two witches discussed the steps, details, and contingency plans for the “Seventh Seat Tutoring Program” in depth.

While the three of them were deep in discussion, someone entered the Scholar Academy’s high-security prison for major offenders.

It was Logic Mortgager Luo Lang.

Through the iron bars, he saw his somewhat haggard son, Butler Luo Wen.

“Your final trial is tomorrow morning. It will be presided over by the newly appointed Law Grand Scholar, Withering Poems. The proceedings will be absolutely fair, and there is no possibility of any other powers interfering with its court.”

Luo Wen raised his head and looked at his father. “I heard the Stone Whisperer has been brought to justice?”

“Yes.”

“He confessed to all his crimes?”

“Yes.”

“Including ordering me to carry them out?”

“Yes.”

“So that means I can pin everything on him as the ‘mastermind,’ weep and claim that I was coerced, and receive a lighter sentence?”

“Yes.”

Luo Wen smiled. “Father, do you think he ordered everything, or did I choose to do it myself?”

“What I think is irrelevant. The truth is what matters.”

Luo Wen’s smile faded.

With a slap, he fell to his knees before Luo Lang, separated by the iron bars.

“Father, I’ve disappointed you.

“The truth is, the Stone Whisperer wasn’t the mastermind. I did it myself.

“The Stone Whisperer couldn’t even embezzle properly. He still owed me money for operating expenses. He was hopeless at doing anything evil.

“When the villa case happened and he learned that an entire household had died, the way he looked at me changed. I knew he wanted to arrest me right then—to really arrest me and interrogate me until I was dead.

“I did it. Tomorrow, I won’t shift the blame onto him.”

“Why could you bring yourself to do it? That was nearly twenty lives.”

“Father, if you want to accomplish something great, you have to make a big enough commotion—one so great that no one can suppress it.

“The owner’s family had actually been selected by me. There were seven of them, and every one of them was thoroughly evil. They deserved to die.

“I never intended to kill everyone in the house. Apart from the owner’s family, the servants and the others were never part of my plan.

“But I never expected Granny Medicine Mortar to curse everyone inside. I thought she would only target the owner’s family. I underestimated the witches’ ruthlessness.”

“So tomorrow, instead of implicating the Stone Whisperer, you’re going to drag Granny Medicine Mortar into this?”

“No. They’re both dead, and I won’t implicate either of them. The current situation, with the three races coexisting, is excellent. It was our ultimate goal all along, and I won’t destroy it.”

Luo Lang remained silent for a long time.

“Then you’ll have to pay with your life.”

“I know, Father. I’m sorry.”

At the heart of the city.

The shopping center.

The president’s office of the Ruyue Changcun Chamber of Commerce.

[Zhiliao] was drenched in sweat.

More than a dozen strange books sat before him.

Accounting Practices, Principles of Economics, The Management Master, and others—the books were listening to a report on the chamber’s development over the past twenty years.

Had it been anyone else, even the most experienced business veteran, [Zhiliao] would never have struggled so much. But the beings before him were knowledge itself. The slightest discrepancy would be exposed immediately.

Fortunately, the books had not come to find fault with him. Chen Miemie had sent them to join the chamber of commerce and assist [Zhiliao] with its management in the future.

Chen Miemie was not the sort of person who discarded his tools once the job was done. He would still leave the Moon Book Hall’s Ruyue Changcun Chamber of Commerce in [Zhiliao]’s hands, and [Zhiliao] would remain its president.

As [Zhiliao] answered the books’ questions, his mind occasionally wandered back to his brief meeting with Chen Miemie earlier that day.

When Chen Miemie introduced him to the group of books, he had assumed they were there to sideline him—to keep him in check.

He had never expected Chen Miemie to say this:

“Xia Chong, for more than twenty years, you’ve been able to predict everything before it happened. You’ve sailed smoothly all the way to becoming the richest man in the city.

“But you should know how much of that was due to your own ability, and how much came from cheating.

“Now, your cheat sheet contains no new answers. With your current abilities and understanding, can you really control such enormous wealth?

“Forget about expanding further. I’m afraid even holding on to what you have will be difficult.

“A new era is arriving, filled with challenges and opportunities. Now is the time for you to keep learning and improving.

“You already have your initial capital, your platform, and your backing. These books will help you grow stronger.

“From this moment onward, I hope you’ll truly rely on your own abilities to build an even greater enterprise. One day, I want the chamber of commerce you founded with your own hands to appear in all one hundred cities across the continent.”

The night passed.

At eight the next morning, Chen Miemie left the library looking exhausted.

That morning, he also paid another visit to the people from the Shedding Clinic.

At noon, when they learned that Chen Miemie was leaving, the Yi siblings insisted on treating him to lunch.

Hall of Ten Thousand People.

By the time Chen Miemie arrived, Yi Zhu and Yi Xian were already there.

Chen Miemie had not expected Madam Dujuan to come as well. She was even holding her younger son’s hand.

“How thoughtful of you, Madam, to come too.”

“Not at all. You took care of us before, and when I heard you were leaving, I came to see you off. You little rascal, hurry up and greet him.” Madam Dujuan urged her younger son.

The little boy timidly called out, “Hello, Brother Miemie.”

Chen Miemie smiled and gently rubbed his head. “What’s your name?”

The boy answered, “Yi Si. My name is Yi Si.”

Chen Miemie’s hand paused slightly.

“‘Si,’ huh? That’s a good name.”

The group chatted as they ate, and the atmosphere was quite pleasant.

After the meal, just before saying goodbye, Chen Miemie asked the Yi siblings, “What are your Mystery Levels now?”

Yi Zhu said, “1.99.”

Yi Xian said, “2.0.”

Chen Miemie shook his head. “Too slow. Put in more effort. Don’t let your guard down.”

After Chen Miemie left, Madam Dujuan asked, “What did Chen Miemie mean by his last question?”

Yi Zhu and Yi Xian both shook their heads.

Madam Dujuan asked again, “How many times has Chen Miemie asked you that?”

Yi Zhu shook his head, showing that he had not noticed.

Yi Xian was more attentive. “That was the second time.”

Madam Dujuan had remarkably sharp instincts.

“That definitely wasn’t a pointless question. From today onward, you two are to put everything else aside and focus all your efforts on raising your Mystery Levels.”

Farther down the road, Chen Miemie also turned back to look at the Yi siblings’ indistinct figures.

“You were there when I arrived, and you’re still here when I leave. What a perfect cycle of cause and effect—truly, fate brings everything together.”

Two in the afternoon.

Riding a broomstick, he flew out through the gates of the Moon Book Hall at low altitude.

“Sixiang City, I’m coming home!”
