Better Late Than Never

It sauntered across the table with elegant feline steps, making a full inspection before finally stopping in front of a small decorative mirror.

In the mirror, a tiny purple kitten with sleek fur and a glittering little stone set on its forehead was looking back at it curiously.

Baobao tilted its head.

The kitten in the mirror tilted its head as well.

It tentatively stretched out a paw and lightly touched the cold surface of the mirror.

The cat in the reflection did the same.

Confusion filled Baobao’s golden eyes.

It lowered its head to look at its own dainty paws, then raised it to stare at the strange, shrunken version of itself in the mirror.

Its dignity.

Where had its dignity gone?

What about the imposing might that could tear space apart with a single swipe?

How had it turned into… this?

Only belatedly did Baobao realize that it had changed.

“Hmph.”

A deeply dissatisfied little snort, tinged with a childish meow, came from Baobao’s nose.

It turned away, presenting its rear to the mirror. It didn’t want to look at its embarrassing self anymore.

Chen Guan had witnessed the entire scene from the side and nearly burst out laughing. He reached over and rubbed its head in consolation.

This little thing had quite the image to maintain.

[It’s looking in the mirror! It knows it’s adorable!]

[Baobao, Mommy loves you.]

[Nooo! Brother Coffin is in danger! Watch me switch places with it!]

Chen Guan silently turned off the comments and let out a smug snort.

This was his Baobao. A bunch of people from the mundane world thought they could switch places with him? Dream on!

Jokes aside, he had business to attend to.

He took the Black Tortoise Token out of his storage space. As he did, the outline of the Black Tortoise on its surface glimmered faintly.

There was a brief silence from the other end of the token. Then a familiar voice rang out, lazy and faintly magnetic.

“Well, well. What brings you here?”

“My leopard evolved.” Chen Guan couldn’t be bothered with pleasantries and went straight to the point.

He described the situation succinctly. “It can talk now, and it can shrink.”

There was a pause on the other end. Then a burst of completely unrestrained laughter erupted.

“Hahahaha! What did you say? It can talk now? What was the first thing it said to you? ‘Lord White Tiger is the most handsome man in the world’?”

Chen Guan stared expressionlessly at Baobao on the desk, which was pawing at the mirror with an irritated look on its face.

He replied to the token, “It called me Chen Gua.”

“Pfft… Cough, cough, cough!”

White Tiger sounded as if he had choked on his own saliva, followed by even more outrageous laughter. The sound transmitted through the token made Chen Guan’s ears ring.

“Chen Gua! Hahaha! That works too. I like it.”

A muscle twitched at the corner of Chen Guan’s forehead.

“I’m going to talk about something serious.” He immediately cut off the other man’s laughter.

“All right, all right, I’m done laughing.”

White Tiger finally reined himself in somewhat, though the amusement in his voice refused to disappear. “Let me guess. Did you feed it something? You went to the Void Realm, didn’t you?”

“Yes.” Chen Guan made no attempt to hide it. The news was practically public knowledge by now, so it was hardly surprising that White Tiger knew.

“I knew it. Tell me the details.” White Tiger sounded helpless. This kid’s luck was absurd. The leopard he had randomly brought home had actually undergone multiple mutations in succession and broken through the limitations of its species.

Chen Guan recounted the entire sequence of events.

“You really are reckless. You dared to feed it something like that.”

“The essence of void energy is devouring and assimilation. Given that little leopard’s original constitution, it would have been one hundred percent certain to burst apart. Not even its ashes would have remained.”

“By guiding it with your mental power, you were practically dancing on the edge of a cliff. One wrong step, and that kitten would have been torn apart by the two opposing forces. Your mental power would have been dragged in as well.”

Chen Guan listened in silence. He knew White Tiger was telling the truth.

The situation at the time had indeed been incredibly dangerous. He had simply been reckless enough to test the limits, relying on his considerable skill and the fact that he wasn’t afraid of dying.

“However…” White Tiger changed his tone, a hint of astonishment creeping into his voice.

“You actually succeeded.”

“Not only did you save it, you unintentionally completed a miraculous leap across species.”

“An original Lightning Cheetah fused with the energy core of a Void Crystal Turtle, and you created an entirely new species.”

“As for why its body became smaller, that’s one of the instincts of void creatures.”

White Tiger explained, “For true void creatures, space is nothing more than a toy. Altering their physical size within the spatial coordinate system is as easy as stretching for us. It has probably only grasped the basics for now.”

“It’s like giving a cellphone to an ancient person. Even if you hand it to them, they won’t know how to use it.”

Chen Guan lowered his head and looked at the tiny, wonderfully soft ball of fur in his arms.

It seemed he had really created something extraordinary.

“So what should I do?” Chen Guan asked. That was the real reason he had contacted White Tiger.

“What should you do?” White Tiger echoed, his tone strange. “Make do with it.”

“You’ve already turned it into this. What else can you do? Just raise it properly.”

Even White Tiger didn’t dare offer any definite conclusions anymore. Everything about this was simply too far beyond common sense.

At that thought, White Tiger’s voice grew unusually serious.

“Listen, kid.”

“That cat of yours is no longer an ordinary summoned beast. As for its limits…” He paused. “I can’t see a ceiling.”

After hearing this conclusion, Chen Guan’s anxious heart finally relaxed.

Not being able to see a ceiling meant limitless potential.

That was a good thing.

“All right, got it.” Chen Guan acknowledged him and prepared to end the call.

He needed to prepare some high-level ingredients to reward his promising little investment.

“Don’t hang up just yet.” White Tiger’s voice rang out again, returning to its usual lazy tone.

Chen Guan froze. A foreboding feeling rose in his heart.

“Since you contacted me first, that saves me the trouble of getting in touch with you later.” White Tiger drawled slowly, each word striking Chen Guan’s newly liberated slacker mentality like a hammer.

“Good timing. I have a mission for you.”

Chen Guan’s heart sank.

He knew it. Sooner or later, this was bound to happen.

Trouble had arrived—late, but right on schedule.

The hand holding the Black Tortoise Token stopped in midair. The ease that had just returned to him vanished without a trace.

He knew it. When someone at White Tiger’s level took the initiative to contact him, it could never be for anything good.

“Can I refuse?” Chen Guan asked the token with utmost sincerity. “I just finished dealing with everything at school. I think I deserve a little vacation.”

“Vacation?” There was a hint of laughter in White Tiger’s voice. “Haven’t you been on vacation this whole time? Don’t play dumb with me, kid.”

White Tiger had never assigned Chen Guan any missions before, primarily because Chen Guan’s strength had been unimpressive and he hadn’t been of much use.
