At the Critical Moment

North Jvlu Continent.

Chu Xingchen and Bai Xuanling sat at a street-side noodle stall, eagerly waving at the owner to bring them their renowned pristine bone broth noodles.

The modest stall was packed full, and as the owner set down steaming bowls of freshly cooked noodles, the customers wore varied expressions—though most seemed surprised.

Bai Xuanling had brought her own bowl, and she casually lifted it to take a hearty sip of the broth. A look of satisfaction spread across her face as she nodded in approval.

Chu Xingchen didn't stand on ceremony either; he picked up his bowl and began eating in silence.

The stall owner swept his gaze over the full seats, a pleased grin spreading across his face. This one wave of business equaled almost an entire day's worth. That handsome young fellow in the lead was certainly generous with his spending.

But if the stall owner knew who these quietly seated customers really were, he might just hesitate to take their money.

Here sat the Yunmeng Pavilion Leader, two Tribulation Transcension elders, five Great Vehicle elders, the Law Enforcement elder, and the External Affairs elder—all crammed into this little noodle stall. Among this group, the lowest cultivation was at the Great Vehicle stage—the pinnacle of cultivation.

Bai Xuanling, meanwhile, was the sole True Immortal alive.

Without interference from any of the other Eighteen Immortal Sects, this assembly alone could sweep through every power presently in North Jvlu Continent.

And now these absurd combat forces sat cramped around a humble noodle stall.

Chu Xingchen ate his noodles and raised an eyebrow, signaling to the Yunmeng Pavilion Leader across from him to join in.

The Yunmeng Pavilion Leader hesitated for a moment, then picked up his bowl and began eating.

Seeing their leader partake, the others didn't hesitate and started tasting their own bowls.

For a hundred years, these top-tier cultivators had rarely eaten for mere pleasure; on the rare occasions they did, it would be elixirs or spirit herbs beneficial to their cultivation.

The noodles were finished.

Steam still curled from the bowls.

Chu Xingchen placed his bowl down on the small table beside him and called out with a smile to the stall owner:

“Another round for everyone, please.”

“Coming right up!” the owner replied promptly.

Hearing his eager response, the Yunmeng Pavilion Leader lowered the hand he had begun to raise in protest.

“I’ll take two bowls,” Bai Xuanling declared, a satisfied look on her face as she raised her chopsticks.

“Got it!” the owner shouted back even faster.

Chu Xingchen sat up contentedly and turned his gaze to the Yunmeng Pavilion Leader:

“Many thanks for Yunmeng Pavilion’s full support.”

The Yunmeng Pavilion Leader replied in a natural tone:

“Thanks to you, friend, I haven’t had noodles in a very long time.”

“But you could have just written—no need to come all this way yourself.”

By now, everyone knew Chu Xingchen was nothing but trouble. If this man died within your territory, you’d be in deeper trouble than being skinned alive.

The Yunmeng Pavilion Leader, in particular, had heard how Xiaoyun Hall had once been so duped by Chu Xingchen’s theatrics that they nearly attached two Tribulation Transcension cultivators to him.

Chu Xingchen drawled lazily: “Your process is just too slow. If I hadn’t come here myself, my foolish apprentice would have had to take on the entire Heretic Cult alone. This way, I made it convenient, and you all had time to join me for a bowl of noodles.”

The Yunmeng Pavilion Leader knew immediately what Chu Xingchen meant: he was criticizing Yunmeng Pavilion for dragging their feet on Cui Hao’s requests, to the point of almost being unable to mobilize anyone.

If not for Chu Xingchen and Bai Xuanling showing up in time, that plea for aid from Zheng Zhaoling might not have sent as many disciples, nor would they have moved so urgently.

Still, some explanations were necessary.

The Yunmeng Pavilion Leader lifted his nearly empty bowl and said:

“Yunmeng Pavilion’s core disciple, Zhaoling, has already been accompanying Junior Cui. Many procedures have been greatly simplified, and even on this trip to North Jvlu Continent, a Tribulation Transcension elder accompanied him for protection.”

“For Yunmeng Pavilion, this has far exceeded standard arrangements.”

Chu Xingchen took the freshly cooked noodles from the stall owner and chuckled:

“Then I’ve truly been honored. This reception must have exceeded even super-standard treatment for me?”

“Hmph.” Bai Xuanling snorted in amusement, then said lazily, “Don’t flatter yourself, kid. You’re just a minor Tribulation Transcension cultivator. This treatment is clearly meant for me—the one and only True Immortal.”

She finished with a leisurely look at the Yunmeng Pavilion Leader:

“Isn’t that right?”

The Yunmeng Pavilion Leader understood they were performing a duet, criticizing Yunmeng Pavilion’s ambiguous attitude and limited support, far from what had been promised.

Seeing the leader hesitate, Chu Xingchen interjected:

“Enough. Every sect has its difficulties. I don’t like putting people in tough spots, and I’m lazy myself. If it weren’t absolutely necessary, I wouldn’t have come.”

“The Heretic Cult has grown too close to the demons. The Great Calamity is near, and such forces must be uprooted.”

“Heavenly Derivative Sect, Pure Heaven Sect, and Grand Path Sect have been tracking their traces, locating demon strongholds. The Buddhist sects guard Southern Jambu Continent, and Xiaoyun Hall holds Eastern Divine Continent.”

“Though the Immortal Sects are mighty, we can’t cover all five continents and ten thousand domains.”

“We can’t afford to be careless. That’s why Senior Bai and I came here personally.”

“North Jvlu Continent falls under Yunmeng Marsh’s jurisdiction. If we organized forces and crossed borders ourselves, Leader, you would surely resent it.”

“With no easy path, I had to come myself and trouble you all to journey to North Jvlu Continent.”

The Yunmeng Pavilion Leader nodded softly:

“We all do our best in such matters.”

“Exactly the point,” Chu Xingcen said, holding his noodles. “The Eighteen Immortal Sects swore a great oath together. No one escapes this calamity—those who watch from afar will be broken one by one. Even the demons can unite, let alone the leaders who understand this suffering from past tribulations.”

The Yunmeng Pavilion Leader glanced at Bai Xuanling, who was silently eating again, then nodded gently.

In truth, it wasn’t that Yunmeng Pavilion hadn’t cooperated.

Normal protocol simply required such procedures. Tribulation Transcension cultivators weren’t vegetables you could just pull from the ground and sun-dry; they were Yunmeng Pavilion’s treasures, and just a glance at them would cause heartache. Core disciples weren’t chives either, grown back after being cut.

But between Chu Xingchen’s special status and Bai Xuanling’s presence, Yunmeng Pavilion had assembled such an enormous escort.

Before the new bowls of noodles could be finished, Bai Xuanling had polished off her two extra bowls.

She set her bowl and chopsticks down with satisfaction:

“Full now. There’s something special about mortal fare.”

Bai Xuanling sighed in appreciation, then turned to the Yunmeng Pavilion Leader:

“Let’s drop past matters. Finish your noodles, then we’ll handle business.”

“Besides, I’m quite fond of that Young Cui. He may not even need us as backup—we might just be here for a little trip.”

The Yunmeng Pavilion Leader nodded again and praised:

“Cui Hao is indeed exceptionally clever.”

Bai Xuanling smiled but didn’t reply. Her gaze drifted back to Chu Xingchen, who had begun eating again.

Little did Cui Hao expect that Chu Xingchen, in order to make it easier for him to get things done, would actually bring out several core members of the Yunmeng Pavilion.

When Chu Xingchen acts as a master, he really has the right touch at crucial moments.

The more critical the moment, the less he falters.
