(Side Story) Trash 03

"We said we're going on a mission, but there's no mission," Little Hei said.

"What do you mean none? Didn't you just hear them? Spaceships, we're talking spaceships!" Fang Zhiyi was clearly excited.

"You mean, the world where Zhao Yichen is?" Little Hei tilted his head.

"Exactly!"

"Ahem, boss, I—"

"You're coming too! If Xiao Yao finds out you weren't with me, I'm done for!"

Money Rat pulled a long face. He'd barely made it back alive, and now he had to set off again?

But Little Hei said, "That breaks protocol. This won't do."

Fang Zhiyi wasn't used to seeing him look so serious.

Then, out of nowhere, a hand landed on his shoulder. Fang Zhiyi turned around and saw Liu Shishi.

"I heard everything~ But don't worry, I won't tell big sister. Wouldn't want you getting scolded by her."

Fang Zhiyi took a quiet step back.

Liu Shishi knew what he was thinking and covered her mouth with a smile. "Coincidentally, I just received a commission. Interested?"

Fang Zhiyi hesitated, eyeing the slip that had appeared in her hand.

Liu Shishi winked playfully. "The original host is a Star Domain Governor. In or not?"

Fang Zhiyi was clearly tempted.

"What's your condition?"

"Condition? As long as you're safe and sound, that's all I ask. Just make sure you come back to see me." Liu Shishi reached out to touch his face but stopped halfway and pulled her hand back.

"Wow, this girl is on another level," Money Rat muttered.

Little Hei nodded in agreement. "She hasn't lost her touch."

In the end, though, Fang Zhiyi couldn't bring Money Rat along. The Quick Travel Bureau was severely understaffed, and there was no way to let two people take on a single commission at the same time.

To be absolutely certain nothing went wrong, Fang Zhiyi kicked Money Rat into another world entirely, not even giving the poor guy a moment to catch his breath after finishing his last mission before he was forced back into the grind.

Year 1100 of the Qiyao Era. The 32nd Star Domain of the Human Empire was invaded. The invaders looked almost human, but they were stronger and faster, and they screamed about reclaiming their homeland as they slaughtered human settlements again and again.

When the Star Domain Governor got word of it, he immediately dispatched the Star Domain forces to counterattack, along with a reconnaissance squad. He needed to figure out what these sudden blue-skinned aliens were all about, since he still had to file a report with the Empire.

There was a young man who got squeezed into the squad at the last minute, a decision that never even went through the Governor's approval. Rumors circulated internally that this fellow had connections to the Empire's nobility, perhaps someone from the Council.

All in all, this was a simple survey job, not too dangerous, and great for polishing one's resume—perfect for a young man with that kind of background.

Under the squad leader's direction, they found a relatively safe spot for observation. In practice, this meant controlling drones to gather intel: enemy locations, movement patterns, things like that. Even so, problems still managed to surface.

The new young man was overly sentimental, a trademark of the high-born noble families. Ordinary people were too exhausted just trying to stay alive to recite poetry while on duty.

But Gu Yuan did exactly that.

Not only did he recite poetry, he took an interest in every blade of grass and every pebble, sitting in front of the observation console for entire days at a time.

The first to notice something off about him was the squad's deputy leader, a tough woman who had once served in the Star Domain military before being transferred here due to injury. She noticed Gu Yuan often using the drones to send out strange signals and reported it immediately. But her report was shut down by the squad leader.

The reason was simple.

Gu Yuan was someone they couldn't afford to offend. It was better to just turn a blind eye. Besides, this was a remote star domain—if Gu Yuan put in a good word for them when he got back, maybe they'd get a chance to move to the bustling Imperial core planets.

The deputy wasn't happy about it, but she held her tongue out of respect for the chain of command.

They'd considered every possibility. They'd even considered the idea that Gu Yuan might be leaking Star Domain military movements. But they never once imagined he'd be falling in love with one of the blue-skinned aliens!

And what was even more ridiculous, he actually took a few accomplices, piloted a cloaked mech out of the safe zone, and went straight into blue-skin territory.

When the squad leader found out, he immediately reported it—not because of the mech, but because Gu Yuan's identity was too sensitive. They were terrified something might happen to him.

And because of Gu Yuan's actions, the suppression campaign that could have gone smoothly came to a grinding halt. The 9th War Corps' high command ordered a stop to the advance and instead sent out small units to search for him.

What those small units didn't expect was to be attacked by "friendly forces."

It had to be said, Gu Yuan's flirting skills were top-tier. He'd gotten together with the blue-skin princess, and so... Gu Yuan now had an army at his disposal—an army that was superior in endurance, strength, and killing power, even if their tech was a bit behind.

From that point on, the Star Domain forces that had once been overwhelmingly dominant began their decline. Under Gu Yuan's command, the Star Domain military suffered attacks on multiple fronts, with many regular soldiers wounded or killed. Yet the 9th War Corps' high command pretended not to see any of it.

Even when word reached the Star Domain Governor, he tacitly approved of the situation. The Empire had a strict hierarchy, and everyone knew the Gu family was untouchable. This was how a battle that should have ended in three months was dragged out indefinitely.

To curry favor with this young Master Gu, the guards at several weapons depots in the interior were pulled away, after which the blue-skin forces raided and pillaged them.

Then came a string of defeats for the Star Domain military. The reason was simple: with so much time having passed, the blue-skin reinforcements had also arrived, using their own transportation methods which, while somewhat primitive, still shifted the battlefield balance. Humanity faced total collapse, outposts were destroyed, and civilian and soldier casualties mounted.

It was this war, prolonged by Gu Yuan's recklessness, that finally caught the Empire's attention.

The Tribunal didn't bother with asking why. Someone had to take the blame for all the losses, public anger needed an outlet, and the deaths of ordinary soldiers needed a scapegoat. The Governor of the 32nd Star Domain was the perfect choice.

The irony, however, came a few years later when Gu Yuan became a peace ambassador, bringing the blue-skinned aliens into the Human Federation. The media painted him as a hero, and the former Star Domain Governor was vilified.

Everything went so smoothly.

"Look here," Little Hei said, conjuring a hand to point at the files. "The original host said he doesn't resent the Tribunal for stripping his position. What he can't accept is being branded a disgrace to humanity. They arrested him, declared to the public that he was a coward, and pinned the failures of the war as well as the deaths of soldiers and civilians all on him. Tsk, tsk."
