Little Journey to the West 013

Yang Jian chuckled but said nothing, when a sudden voice spoke up nearby: “Third Prince, the Jade Emperor’s meaning couldn’t be clearer. If they follow the rules of the mortal world honestly, we’ll turn a blind eye. But if they play dirty, we can make our move.”

Nezha turned to look at the portly general. After a long pause: “Tianpeng, you’ve got a sharp mind.”

“Of course, of course!”

“Is the wine in Chang’e’s palace good?”

“Naturally... uh... when did I ever go to the Moon Palace? Don’t talk nonsense!” Tianpeng leaped to his feet.

But Nezha, with a mocking grin, patted his backside and walked away.

“You, you, don’t leave! Explain yourself!”

The immortals on the Jasper Palace had all dispersed, leaving only Lord Lao, stroking his beard in thought.

“Lord Lao, everyone’s gone. Should we leave too?” a boy attendant beside him asked.

Lord Lao smacked his lips: “If those fakes really obtain the scriptures, the amusement at Spirit Mountain will be immense.”

“How could that be? They’re no match for those monks combined,” the attendant said. “The outcome is obvious.”

Lord Lao shook his head: “Wrong. No one can see the outcome.” He understood why the Jade Emperor had laughed. As the foremost of the Four Emperors, seeing others’ karma was simple for him, yet this time even the Jade Emperor couldn’t perceive the origin or destination of those counterfeit pilgrims.

This was undoubtedly a matter of great intrigue.

“Beyond these nine heavens, there exist other realms. The path of cultivation truly has no end.”

“Lord Lao, if we don’t leave soon, your elixirs will all be eaten by the ox.”

“Ah, I forgot that! Let’s go, let’s go!”

In a valley thick with miasma, the Scorpion Demoness now wore a grim expression as she stared at the group before her.

No, wrong—a bunch of grotesque figures: a fierce, savage monkey; a scarlet-bearded giant carp demon; an eight-tailed fox; and a bare-chested monk with tattoos all over. Around them, her lesser demons lay scattered and defeated.

The Scorpion Demoness finally came to her senses.

“Dare I ask... are you Tripitaka?”

Fang Zhiyi cleared his throat and stepped forward: “I am Tripitaka.”

The last shred of hope in the Scorpion Demoness’s heart shattered.

Her smile was more bitter than tears: “I had no idea the Tripitaka Master was coming. Forgive me for not welcoming you properly! Please pardon my sins!”

“Spare the nonsense! Hand over my disciple’s disciple, or I’ll wreck your cave!”

“Yes, yes, I’ll hand him over!” The Scorpion Demoness immediately turned and ordered her remaining minions to bring out a human from the cave.

He was an ordinary man in tattered clothes. As soon as he was freed, he rushed straight to the Eight-tailed Fox. Then the Scorpion Demoness witnessed what happened next.

“Here, the money we agreed on.” A gold ingot was pressed into the man’s hand.

“Great, Great King! At first you said I just had to be captured, but you didn’t mention I’d get scoured clean! Those demons scrubbed me with brushes!” The man lifted his clothes to reveal his red, irritated skin.

“Alright, alright, I’ll add another one, okay?” The Eight-tailed Fox pulled out another gold ingot. “Remember to go back down the mountain and take good care of your old mother.”

“Yes, yes, I will never forget!”

As the man ran off, the Eight-tailed Fox formed a hand seal and flicked it onto the man’s back. Wherever the man passed, the miasma parted.

When it turned back and saw the stunned Scorpion Demoness, its expression instantly hardened: “How dare you! You captured my disciple! Do you think my master doesn’t exist?!”

The Scorpion Demoness was utterly humiliated.

What kind of disciple was that? They were clearly hired bait!

Though she thought this, she dared not show it. She recalled a recent rumor about a ferocious gang calling themselves a scripture-gathering team, led by one named Tripitaka. They used every trick in the book, and anyone foolish enough to capture someone connected to them would be in deep trouble.

The worst part was—they couldn’t be beaten!

Among them was the Great Sage Equaling Heaven. At first, some demons hadn’t heard the name, but after inquiring in the Central Plains, they learned that this Great Sage had once stormed straight through the Southern Heavenly Gate!

Thus, many demons surrendered at the mere reputation.

“Uh... well...” Fang Zhiyi’s words cut through the Scorpion Demoness’s thoughts.

“I know the rules! Great King! From now on, the entire Scorpion Cave will follow your every command!” The Scorpion Demoness did not hesitate—she dropped to her knees.

Fang Zhiyi pursed his lips. Were all demons this sensible nowadays? Shouldn’t they put up a struggle?

“Reputation matters. Once our brand is established, things will be much smoother,” Fang Zhiyi said.

But Ghost Tripitaka suddenly let out a sigh.

When Sun Wukong and Fang Zhiyi both looked at him, he fell silent.

The Scorpion Demoness, clearly skilled in social graces, didn’t even wait for them to speak. She immediately ordered her minions to prepare wine and food. By the time the feast was laid out, a banner reading “Tripitaka” had already been raised at her cave entrance.

The old fox was very pleased and praised the Scorpion Demoness. Sha Wujing stared at the table, planning what to eat first. Sun Wukong also felt quite satisfied; he was now very pleased with Fang Zhiyi. He had originally expected following a monk on a scripture-gathering journey would involve endless annoyances, but this monk didn’t follow any rules at all—rather carefree.

Fang Zhiyi, however, was somewhat troubled. How had this turned into him taking over territory?

“Great King—no, honourable monk. Are you heading west?” the Scorpion Demoness asked after several rounds of toasts.

Fang Zhiyi nodded: “That’s right. After your territory, we’ll officially enter the Western Regions.”

“Be careful. Ahead there’s an exceptionally powerful demon. None of us dare go near.”

“Oh?” Fang Zhiyi grew interested. “None of the demons here dare provoke him? What skills does he have?”

“It’s not so much his skills... it’s that his father is formidable. We can’t afford to offend him. You see, we lesser demons rely on our own cultivation, while he just announces his old man’s name at the start.”

“Who?” Sun Wukong asked, downing a jar of wine with a belch.

“Red Boy. His father is the Bull Demon King, a being with heavenly power!”

At that name, everyone in the scripture-gathering crew turned to look at Sun Wukong, who was busy eating and drinking.

Sun Wukong, mouth full of fruit, looked around: “Why are you all staring at me?”

“Well, Great Sage, this Bull Demon King is... the Great Sage Equaling Heaven, right? I think I glimpsed him once from afar. He was your sworn brother...”

Sha Wujing nodded vigorously, his mouth full of food. Though he rarely spoke on the journey, he had been listening to the conversations between Sun Wukong and the others, and had learned much about Sun Wukong’s past.

As for Fang Zhiyi, he already knew it all.
