A New Life

"Breakfast is ready, you two lovely young ladies."

La Di knocked on his daughter's door, his voice gentle and full of the morning's fresh energy.

A flurry of noisy commotion immediately came from inside the room.

"Hemi!"

"Ow! That hurts, that hurts..."

Then came a dull thud, followed by the unmistakable sound of someone rolling off the bed and tumbling across the floor a few times.

"Are you two alright?" La Di couldn't help but ask. He could almost picture the chaotic scene inside.

"We're... we're fine!" In the room, Hemi scrambled to her feet, rubbing whatever arm or knee she'd bumped, and answered with as much energy as she could muster, trying to hide her earlier clumsiness.

Before long, the two young girls appeared before La Di, fully dressed. Lidi's hair had been brushed, but one stubborn tuft stuck up, clearly due to the rush. Hemi still had the rosy flush of just waking up on her face, but her eyes had already regained their lively spark.

"What happened?" La Di asked his daughter curiously.

"Nothing much." Lidi sighed. "When I woke up, she was lying on top of me like an octopus."

"You know I toss and turn when I sleep. I can't help it." Hemi scratched her head sheepishly. "Sometimes when I wake up in the morning, I've flipped completely around on the bed!"

La Di couldn't help but chuckle, and didn't press the matter further.

"It smells amazing!"

When they reached the dining table, Hemi sniffed the air, and her eyes immediately lit up. "Mr. La Di, I didn't know you were such a good cook!"

The girl's gaze lingered on the basket of golden, crispy croissants and the cream-topped cakes arranged on the table.

"Uh... actually, no. I bought them from the bakery nearby." La Di gave an awkward little laugh. "Their pastries are pretty cheap, and they taste great."

"Really! That sounds wonderful!"

Hemi smiled brightly and reached out, rolling up her sleeves.

"What are you doing?" La Di looked at her curiously, then his gaze froze for a moment as he caught sight of the dense cluster of tiny needle marks on her arm. The corner of his mouth twitched almost imperceptibly.

"Oh, sorry. Old habit." Hemi quickly pulled her sleeve back down, trying to brush it off with a lighthearted tone, playfully sticking out her tongue. "Back in the old days, whenever there was something good to eat, it usually meant they were about to draw my blood..."

Hemi's voice trailed off, and though she was still smiling, there was a faint trace of bitterness hidden beneath that smile.

A visible flicker of heartache passed through La Di's eyes.

"That won't happen anymore, child. Never again." La Di gently placed his hand on Hemi's head.

Hemi looked up at him, meeting the genuine tenderness in his gaze. Her eyes grew slightly warm, but she blinked quickly, pushing the sting away. Suddenly, she turned and stared intently at Lidi, who was sitting beside her.

"What? Is there something on my face?" Lidi had just picked up a muffin when she noticed Hemi's gaze and shifted uncomfortably, touching her cheek in confusion.

"Nothing. I just thought you were about to burst into tears again." Hemi shrugged.

"You... why would you think that?" Lidi's cheeks flushed instantly, a mix of embarrassment and indignation.

"Oh, I figured mentioning earlier stuff would make you cry, especially since you bawled your eyes out last night..."

"Hemi!" Lidi let out a yell. "Didn't we agree not to talk about last night?!"

"Oh, sorry. I forgot..."

"You cried just as loudly! How dare you say that about me?"

"I was just crying along with you."

The two of them once again dissolved into a playful scuffle, the brief heaviness of earlier moments scattering in the burst of youthful energy.

La Di sat at the table feeling a little awkward, but a faint smile tugged at his lips. He'd actually heard both girls crying last night, since the room's soundproofing wasn't all that great.

"Alright, you two ladies, time to eat. The food will get cold if you wait too long."

Lidi and Hemi finally settled down and began their breakfast.

"Father, are you going out today?"

Lidi studied La Di carefully, noticing that he was dressed formally—a dark suit that was a bit worn but neatly pressed and clean, and a somewhat vintage round bowler hat placed solemnly at the corner of the table.

"Yes, time to get back to work." La Di smiled. "After all, I've got two more daughters to provide for now."

"I can work too!" Hemi raised her hand, eager to show she wouldn't just freeload, even though her cheeks were still stuffed with food. "I've done all sorts of jobs before."

"I... me too." Lidi added.

"No, you two will go to the church school and learn to read and write." La Di poured cold water on their enthusiasm. "That way, you'll be able to find respectable jobs in the future."

"Fine..." The two girls sighed in unison.

Breakfast continued in a slightly subdued but warm atmosphere.

But no matter what, their new life had already begun.

...

"Xia Lun! You're back!"

Xia Lun watched as Liyana swung on the swing in the courtyard, with Mo Lini pushing her from behind, huffing a bit with the effort. He frowned slightly.

"Why are you hogging the swing from Mo Lini?"

"I've only been on it for one minute!" Liyana's eyes widened as she protested loudly, as if she'd been falsely accused of something terrible.

Xia Lun looked at her with obvious suspicion, clearly not buying it.

It was like a kid caught by their parents in front of the computer after coming home from work—no matter what they'd actually been doing, by that point they'd already been playing on it all day.

"Oh, Xia Lun, you're back!"

Mo Lini spotted Xia Lun and immediately stopped pushing Liyana, running over to him, panting.

"Luo Lun's already back, but she looks pretty tired. She's resting in her room." Mo Lini reported.

Xia Lun nodded.

The situation at Luo Lun's blood factory had clearly been even worse. An experience like that, with all the shock and exhaustion it brought to the heart, would probably take some time to digest and heal.

Still, Xia Lun believed she'd bounce back soon—after all, she was someone Aina held in high regard.

When the swing reached its highest point, Liyana suddenly stood up on it. Then she leaped high into the air, twisting and somersaulting like a diver, before landing perfectly in front of Xia Lun.

Beside her, Mo Lini dutifully clapped a few times, her little face full of admiration.

Xia Lun silently watched Liyana's sudden antics, waiting for her to speak.

"Xia Lun!" Liyana's voice was full of excitement, as if she were about to announce some great event.

"What is it?"

Liyana pulled out a bottle of dragon's breath wine from who knows where, the amber liquid gently swaying in the glass bottle: "Drink with me tonight!"
