"No thanks."
Le Xiaowei, afraid she might lose control of her murderous impulses, quickly pulled Yuan Qiaoqiao into the car.
In the distance, a group of boys who had just scavenged some food came running back, placing the snacks they’d grabbed on the ground with disappointed expressions.
"We didn’t get much. Probably only enough for two or three days."
Gao Min patted one of them on the shoulder.
"Don’t worry, I’ve got a plan. We’ll follow her."
Gao Min’s gaze shifted to the black sedan, a sharp glint flashing in her eyes.
She had already spoken to Yuan Qiaoqiao like that, yet that woman still acted so arrogantly—just looking at her made Gao Min furious.
The unlucky guy who had gone to move the car barely finished when he saw chaos breaking out near their leader. Without a second thought, he rushed over.
"What are you all doing?!"
Yuan Qiaoqiao heard those words just before leaving.
"Thank you, sis." Yuan Qiaoqiao lifted her head solemnly, looking at Le Xiaowei.
"How are you going to thank me?" Le Xiaowei asked while driving.
Well, after two busy days, she had finally managed to get Yuan Qiaoqiao onto the highway.
"Huh?" Yuan Qiaoqiao blinked, not quite processing the question.
A few minutes later, Le Xiaowei felt a pale, delicate arm being offered in front of her lips. Yuan Qiaoqiao squeezed her eyes shut nervously.
"Sis, how about you take a bite, then lend me some energy cores? Once I regain consciousness and become a super strong zombie, I’ll hunt energy cores for you every day!"
Come on, getting bitten by sis and turning into a zombie would be so cool!
Le Xiaowei: (﹁"﹁)
"Forget it. You’d look ugly as a zombie."
Yuan Qiaoqiao: QAQ
Wahhh, why would sis say that about her?
Truth be told, Le Xiaowei had a tiny ulterior motive for bringing Yuan Qiaoqiao along. One of her side missions was to set up Le Xu with someone, and while this girl was a bit young, her personality wasn’t bad.
But if Yuan Qiaoqiao turned into a zombie…
Human-zombie romance?
That sounded downright terrifying.
"Just stay human. Being human is fine. Once we reach S Province and I find the people I know, I’ll send you to a safe zone. Don’t worry about that."
Le Xiaowei didn’t look at Yuan Qiaoqiao’s expression, only hearing a somewhat dejected "Oh."
She was about to ask what that meant when she spotted two cars tailing her in the rearview mirror.
They looked like Yuan Qiaoqiao’s classmates.
"Si," Le Xiaowei called out to the system.
"What’s up?" Si responded, puzzled.
"This world of yours doesn’t seem very lively. Is my shifu not here?"
Le Xiaowei probed carefully, hoping for any clue about her master.
Even though she hadn’t thought much about her during those few hours of sleep, the longing was still there.
"I don’t know. I can’t sense her."
Si’s voice carried a hint of resignation. The stronger the soul fragment, the more likely it was to develop self-awareness—and the more its personality would diverge from the original.
Fragments like that could even disguise themselves. Other worlds were manageable, but the soul fragment in this world seemed rebellious. Yet after scanning all major characters in the novel’s plot, Si hadn’t found any rebellious female roles.
Could the soul fragment be… male?
No, that couldn’t be. Soul fragments weren’t reincarnations—gender didn’t change.
"Well, at least I got to spend two years with shifu." Le Xiaowei didn’t sound too disappointed.
She’d probably get another chance to meet her.
Si glanced at Yuan Qiaoqiao on the screen, who seemed like a total airhead. Nothing about her stood out.
And she didn’t even have any special abilities.
This soul fragment was incredibly powerful—even in a cultivation world, it would be top-tier talent. There was no way it was Yuan Qiaoqiao.
Ugh, what a headache.
Meanwhile, Yuan Qiaoqiao, who had been sitting quietly, suddenly looked around, brows furrowed and cheeks puffed up like a steamed bun.
Huh? Did it feel like someone was watching her just now?
Unfortunately, Si was half-asleep and didn’t notice Yuan Qiaoqiao’s odd behavior.
Due to certain restrictions, traffic to A Province (the neighboring province) had been limited, so the highway was nearly empty of zombies and cars. But the route from A Province to S Province had no such limitations.
By the time they reached a rest stop, it was already dark. There was still some gasoline left, but the convenience store had been completely looted.
After refueling, Yuan Qiaoqiao pulled out a bottle of water from the trunk and poured it into a self-heating meal, adding two marinated eggs for good measure.
At times like this, self-heating meals were absolute lifesavers.
The kind-hearted Yuan Qiaoqiao then stabbed Le Xiaowei right in the feels.
"Sis, why don’t you take a nap? Driving must be exhausting."
Le Xiaowei: "..."
"I’d love to, but I just can’t sleep. With the energy I have right now, I could probably drive this route ten times over without getting tired."
Besides, last night, Le Xiaowei had seriously considered smacking herself with a brick—until Si stopped her.
"If you want to die, just say so."
A zombie’s head was precious. Si had never met a host so eager to crack their own skull open.
Le Xiaowei: sobs
What’s wrong with just wanting to sleep?
"Oh, right. I forgot. Sis, you look just like a normal person." Yuan Qiaoqiao’s face flushed as she dug into her meal.
Melancholic, Le Xiaowei wished she could light a cigarette and philosophize about life—but even if she had one, she couldn’t smoke it.
She just hoped her soul wouldn’t end up looking like a panda after this world.
"If you’re tired, go ahead and sleep. We’re in the middle of nowhere anyway. I’ll keep watch."
Le Xiaowei hated her identity more than ever. If she weren’t a zombie, Yuan Qiaoqiao would be the one on night duty.
With a flick of her wrist, several glowing energy cores appeared in her palm.
She had looted them from a few zombies on the way out with Yuan Qiaoqiao.
One of them, a striking purple core, was larger than the others—taken from a lightning-type zombie. If she hadn’t been quick (and terrifyingly skilled at cracking skulls), she might’ve been obliterated by its thunderous wrath.
Clutching the purple core, she leaned back in the passenger seat.
Absorbing this one was going to take some effort.
Yuan Qiaoqiao peeked from the backseat, saw Le Xiaowei meditating with the core, and didn’t dare disturb her. After finishing her meal, she tossed the trash out the window and curled up to sleep.
Gao Min’s group, still tailing them, also stopped to rest, eating a quick meal and assigning night watch duties.
"Those two up ahead seem to be asleep," Wang Ming reported after scouting the area and passing Le Xiaowei’s car.
"Asleep? They’ve got some nerve," Gao Min muttered in disbelief.
Even if this was a highway, there were still villages nearby. If any zombies wandered over, they’d be done for.
And they’d already encountered psychic-type zombies—ones that could control others to attack humans from a frightening distance.
Could it be that these two had no idea?
"I just saw a box earlier," Wang Ming said, tossing the self-heating pot package he'd picked up in front of the group.
They actually had something this good!
Their throats bobbed visibly—clearly, they were drooling over it.
"Is there anything left inside?"
