Consultation

Before setting out, Chen Miemie wanted to solve the problem of waterproof gear first.

“Come on. Let’s go to a shop run by the [Blacktide Commerce]. I want the best.”

Dentist nodded. “You can buy ordinary gear at the shop, but the best equipment isn’t available on the open market. There’d be no point in going there. I can contact someone from the commerce directly.”

Chen Miemie thought it over. He didn’t particularly want to owe anyone a favor, but truly good things required special connections, so he agreed.

Not long after Dentist sent the message, Auctioneer replied that she would have the goods delivered as soon as possible.

Since yesterday, whenever Dentist needed anything, she could contact Auctioneer directly. If necessary, she could even contact Miss Bo herself.

Chen Miemie said, “Dentist, when they deliver the things later, don’t start fussing over me. I’m buying them, not taking them for free.”

Dentist shrugged. She didn’t care about any of that. After returning home last night, she had thought things through. She wasn’t a politician, the head of a commerce, or even a partner in the travel agency. All she needed to do was her job as a tour guide.

While they waited, Chen Miemie began exercising the privileges of a client with money, asking Dentist questions.

“Yesterday, I met your city lord, Mute. Communicating with her is incredibly difficult. Why force a little girl to go onstage and sing?”

“First of all, the city lord isn’t an ordinary little girl. She’s held the position of city lord for two hundred years.

“Secondly, no one is forcing her. The city needs her. The [Mystery] she awakened is called ‘Chanting,’ and it’s a legacy of one of the [Nine Pillars of Humanity]. Her singing can grant everyone in the city a temporary enhancement effect.”

“What are the [Nine Pillars of Humanity]?” Chen Miemie asked, somewhat puzzled. He had never heard of them in Six-Elephant City or at the Moon Library.

“The [Nine Pillars of Humanity] are the nine pillars and spiritual leaders of humankind. They generally guard the border cities at the edges of human territory. Our [Wavefoam Harbor] is the southeastern frontier of humanity, guarded by one of the Nine Pillars, the [Sound Pillar].”

“Are you saying that ‘Chanting’ is the Sound Pillar’s ability, and Mute is this generation’s [Sound Pillar]?”

“Yes and no. The reason the [Nine Pillars of Humanity] are so revered, aside from their noble character, is that they possess tremendous power—each one is capable of protecting an entire city.

“I don’t know when Mute inherited ‘Chanting.’ Supposedly, she first became city lord because of her ability. But possessing the ability isn’t enough to become one of the Nine Pillars. You also have to put it to use, and Mute…”

Chen Miemie felt that something about this didn’t make sense.

“She’s held the power of ‘Chanting’ for so long without being able to use it properly, and the people don’t have a problem with that?”

“No.” Dentist was very certain. “The [Nine Pillars of Humanity] have existed throughout eight eras and twenty thousand years of human history. Some of those who inherited the powers of the Nine Pillars were weak, but not one of them ever failed to live up to the name of ‘hero.’”

“Not one?”

“Not one.”

The conversation grew somewhat heavy.

After a brief pause, Dentist continued, “I heard that, in the beginning, Mute couldn’t speak at all. People simply called her the Mute Girl. It was only after years of arduous effort that she reached her current level.

“Now, although her halting chanting sounds very awkward, at least she can complete an entire song, allowing her ability to produce a tiny effect.”

Dentist knew only a limited amount of the inside story. Chen Miemie had learned all he could about Mute for the time being, so he turned his attention to Dentist herself.

“Dentist, why did a high-ranking mystic like you join the [Blacktide Travel Agency]? The pay may be decent, but this is still a service job. Surely you have other options.”

“Me? I didn’t join. I’m merely affiliated with them, and I can leave whenever I want. The pay for guiding tours is quite good, the work is flexible, and it’s usually not dangerous. It makes a decent temporary side job.

“Actually, when we first met at the travel agency yesterday, it wasn’t just you who chose me. I thought you seemed all right too, so I agreed. If someone rubs me the wrong way, I can always refuse.”

That was what Dentist said aloud, but inside, her heart was bleeding. If she had known Chen Miemie was such a dangerous man, she wouldn’t have accepted the job even if someone had beaten her to death.

Chen Miemie, however, was quite pleased with himself. “Of course. Everyone loves me. You could say it was love at first sight—we hit it off immediately. Don’t worry. Follow me for the next few days, and I guarantee you’ll eat well and drink well.”

At the mention of food, Dentist became interested. “Chen Miemie, what kind of flavors do you like? Can you handle spicy food? What about raw dishes?”

Chen Miemie was equally enthusiastic. For him, the joy of traveling was five percent scenery, five percent food, and ninety percent having good companions along the way.

“I eat anything. Raw or cooked, hot or cold, spicy or sweet—I’m not picky.”

Dentist was delighted. “Perfect. We have plenty of seafood here. The sashimi is wonderfully fresh, and there’s also our specialty raw seafood in marinade. It’s absolutely addictive. I have a few personal sauces, too. I’ll share them with you when the time comes.”

The two were practically about to throw their arms around each other and make plans for a grand feast when a plate of roast chicken silently appeared on the table in front of them.

Dentist rubbed her eyes. “Where did this roast chicken come from? It’s still steaming. It smells amazing.”

Chen Miemie obviously knew what was going on and hurried to reassure her.

“I’m not going out just to eat. I’m collecting recipes.

“I heard this place has a famous dish called [Seafood-Stuffed Roast Chicken].

“The whole chicken is roasted until the skin is crisp and the meat tender. When you cut open the breast, it’s packed with all kinds of seafood—white clams, prawns, flower clams, and squid. The secret seasoning blends the flavors of the chicken and seafood together perfectly. Add roasted mushrooms and refreshing mango, and it’s an absolute match made in heaven!”

The roast chicken on the table gave a slight shudder, and even more steam rose from it.

Chen Miemie struck while the iron was hot. “And that’s not all. I’ve also heard of coconut roast chicken. The fragrance of coconut cuts through the richness of the roast chicken, while the shredded coconut and crushed nuts sprinkled on top make it utterly irresistible!”

Dentist was still puzzled. “Chen Miemie, where did you buy this? As far as I know, there’s no roast chicken like this anywhere nearby.”

Chen Miemie smoothly pushed the plate toward Dentist. “I had it prepared especially for you. I’m going to be troubling you over the next few days, so consider this a small token of my appreciation.”

Dentist thought nothing of it. Seduced by the aroma, she had already swallowed several times.

“Then I won’t stand on ceremony?”

“Go ahead.”

Dentist took a single bite and polished off an entire chicken leg. “You’re not having any?”

“No, I’ve already eaten. It’s all yours.”

Just as Dentist was eating until her mouth was greasy, a knock sounded on the door once again.

Their new visitor had arrived.

“It should be someone from the [Blacktide Commerce] delivering the waterproof gear you wanted.”

Dentist was closest to the door. She rose, still chewing on a second chicken leg, and opened it.

Standing outside were two people in black, a man and a woman.

Dentist froze.

“Miss... Miss Bo, you came personally?”
