A Bizarre Day

Most anomalous beings had less-than-pleasant personalities. They were highly two-faced, treating outsiders and their own people as though they were entirely different kinds of creatures.

Mian Ruyan quickly became popular, and everyone regarded her in a different light.

Bobo even wanted to work with her on developing a “new generation of roast chicken—anomaly special edition.”

Mian Ruyan particularly liked following Qinghua around. Qinghua was dignified and gentle, speaking in a soft voice.

At that moment, Mian Ruyan was following behind her, learning about various matters concerning the household.

Apart from Chen Miemie and The King in Yellow, there was nothing that could really be considered a secret. Qinghua introduced everything to her one by one.

“This entire floor belongs to us. 1801 is the women’s dormitory, where you can stay temporarily if you need to rest. 1805 is the men’s dormitory. Joker is currently living there.”

“Joker? The Joker who sacrificed himself during the trial? He’s still alive?”

“Yes. Through the power of the Eternal Moon, Joker survived and became an anomalous being. He usually comes out during the day and returns late at night. If you run into him at night, you don’t need to be afraid, but he’s a little crazy, so it’s best not to get too close.”

“Oh, oh.”

Mian Ruyan nodded repeatedly. To her, this was all vital information concerning her survival.

“Your current job is to cook more for us. From what I’ve observed, your [Mystery] won’t improve enough if you only cook for yourself. Anomalous beings have to eat your food as well, so you’ll have to work hard every day.”

Mian Ruyan already knew that. Just now, she had sensed that the [Mystery] which refused to increase at home had risen dramatically the moment the anomalous beings finished eating.

She hadn’t come here to cook at all. She had come here to grow stronger.

The feeling of receiving immediate feedback made her wish she could cook nonstop.

Qinghua continued:

“At present, you’re the weakest member of our society. Your [Mystery] is still purely auxiliary, so I’m a little worried about your safety when you go out. If you encounter someone with ulterior motives, they might see you as the weak link in our organization and target you.

“So, until you’ve grown stronger, don’t reveal to outsiders that you’ve joined us. Also, keep this little snail with you. Crush it if you run into danger.”

“Is this a miniature version of the Lost One from earlier?”

“Yes. This is a small part of the Lost One’s body. It can determine your location and send out an alarm. Once you crush it, we’ll come rescue you as quickly as possible.”

“Qinghua, I noticed you only had one or two bites just now. Was the food not to your taste? What kind of food do you like?”

“Just call me Qinghua. In our household, someone who looks young may actually be hundreds of years old, while someone who looks mature might be relatively young. It’s too difficult to determine seniority, so we simply call one another by name.

“The food was delicious, but I’m made of porcelain. I can only sample it and can’t eat very much. If I have to name something I like, I suppose I’d say dirt?”

And so, Mian Ruyan followed Qinghua around, familiarizing herself with every aspect of the house.

After making a full circuit and returning to Room 1803, Mian Ruyan discovered that the lively room from earlier had fallen completely silent.

The anomalous beings had either disappeared, or were moving around quietly—or not moving at all.

Qinghua lowered her voice. “Chen Miemie is taking his afternoon nap. We mustn’t disturb him.”

Mian Ruyan nodded. Once again, she recognized the importance of Chen Miemie, the organization's foreign minister.

Qinghua’s task of showing her around had ended, and Loop took over.

“Come with me. I’ll introduce you to some of our other companions in the city.”

Mian Ruyan hurried after Loop.

The two of them went downstairs.

Loop stopped as soon as they stepped out of the entrance to the South District building.

“The road beneath our feet is Road Rage. When you have free time, you can bring it a plate of food and scatter it directly onto the ground.”

“Road Rage?”

Mian Ruyan looked around. Everything nearby appeared normal, and she couldn’t detect any anomalous being at all.

Loop lightly tapped the ground and introduced the empty air. “Road Rage, this is our new member, Mian Ruyan. She doesn’t have much combat ability, so look after her when you can.”

“Understood.”

A muffled voice came from beneath the ground.

Mian Ruyan pointed at the pavement, her words stumbling slightly. “Road Rage is… is the road beneath our feet?”

“That’s right. This entire road running through the South District is Road Rage. It already knows you now. When no one else is around, you can talk to it, ask it for help, or have it pass along messages. When outsiders are present, it won’t respond to you.”

Next, Loop took Mian Ruyan to meet the Sedan Chair. The two of them rode it to the Fat Orange Hotel.

Mian Ruyan had spent a terrifying day there and was, of course, familiar with the place.

Loop introduced her to Baibai and Yarn Ball.

“All right. Chen Miemie specifically asked me to bring you here. He said that your [Mystery] needs diligent practice. There often won’t be anyone at home, so you can come to the Fat Orange Hotel by yourself. Your ability can be trained here around the clock.”

Yarn Ball leaped onto Mian Ruyan’s shoulder.

“From now on, you’re the hotel’s part-time chef, meow.”

At seven that evening, Mian Ruyan returned home in a daze.

Everything she had experienced that day was far beyond what she could accept.

She pushed open the front door absentmindedly.

“Well, Little Yan’s home. How was your day?” Mian Zhiyao, Mian Ruyan’s father, set down his newspaper and looked at her.

Mian Ruyan shook her head blankly. “It was more absurd than the craziest novel I’ve ever read.”

Mian Zhiyao had no intention of prying into what she had learned. He was simply concerned about his daughter.

“Can you get used to it?”

“They’re fairly friendly, but as for getting used to it… that’ll take a while. Right now, everything looks like an anomalous being to me—even that newspaper in your hand.”

“Haha, sounds like you’ve seen plenty of new things. Have you eaten?”

“Yes. I had a big bowl of cat food. I’m going back to my room to rest.”

“All right. Go ahead.”

Mian Ruyan didn’t actually rest when she returned to her room. Afraid that her memory wouldn’t be good enough and that she might overlook something, she found a notebook and wrote down several important details.

Once she lay in bed, she quickly fell asleep. Her face was full of exhaustion, yet the faintest little smile lingered at the corners of her mouth.

She murmured softly in her sleep, “What a fascinating world. My journey to becoming stronger has begun.”

Tonight was an Eternal Moon night.

Shortly after six o’clock, Gongshu Feiliang of the Moon Library received a message.

It was as though a spring had been installed beneath him. He shot up from his chair.

Then he hurriedly tidied his appearance, brought along his professional measuring-tool case, and prepared to leave.

“Dad, where are you going?” Bridge Princess noticed his unusual behavior.

“Adults are talking. Children shouldn’t ask.”

“I saw the screen on your wristwatch. I saw the name Chen Miemie.”

“If you already know, why ask? I’m leaving.”

“I’m coming with you.”

Gongshu Feiliang froze. “What are you going for? No one called for you.”

Bridge Princess raised her own wristwatch. “Look. I asked Chen Miemie, and he said I could go too.”

“You’re crazy. We’re going to the base of [Eternal Moon], which is a core area. You haven’t joined them, yet you’re going to show up there on your own? Do you know how easy it is to get in and how difficult it’ll be to leave?”

Bridge Princess remained calm. “Didn’t you say before that I’ve been connected to the Eternal Moon since the day I was born? Can I really escape it?”

“Have you thought this through?”

“Let’s go. They saved my life, after all. What is there to be afraid of?”

Bridge Princess had already put on her coat.
