You Came

He was sitting right on the throne, merging seamlessly with the entire platform and the river of stars stretching above his head, as if he had existed there since the dawn of time.

A set of pitch-black, ancient-looking armor covered his entire body without a single gap, and even his face was hidden behind a smooth visor—total enigma, no details spared.

"We call him the King of the Tower. But compared to all the other creatures lured up here from the lower levels, he's special. You can't kill him."

Li Yan's voice rang out from behind, his tone unusually grave.

No one knew how the King of the Tower came to be, or why he could rise from the dead. Ever since humans kept records of this place, he had been here.

He stood still alongside this tower and this throne, quiet and unchanging for all that time.

Back during the large-scale purge operation, the King of the Tower was naturally one of the targets. His power was not particularly strong relative to the other threats at the time, and the people then took him down with ease.

But that was when the strange thing happened.

After a short while, the King of the Tower mysteriously reappeared. Again and again, people gradually realized that he could not be killed, just like a fixed NPC that respawns on a regular schedule.

Thus, out of reverence, they gave him the name the King of the Tower.

The King of the Tower was nothing like the other monsters here.

He had no urge to attack humans unprovoked, and would only fight back passively. He looked nearly human but never spoke to anyone, sitting motionless on his throne day in and day out, year after year.

That was why even the generation of garrison generals that Li Yan belonged to had chosen to simply ignore this mysterious King of the Tower.

Li Yan stepped forward to stand shoulder to shoulder with Chen Guan, his burly figure blocking the starlight from the side. Chen Guan noticed that Li Yan's shoulder line was tensed up, a rare posture of full vigilance.

"When I first came to this post, I visited here once out of curiosity. I shattered him into the most primitive crystal dust, just like all those monsters down below."

Li Yan kept his eyes fixed on the figure ahead as he continued speaking.

"But it did nothing. In less than a day, he had already reformed completely on that throne, good as new. He's a real pain to deal with."

"Wow, that's wild?"

Chen Guan's gaze lingered on the set of ancient armor.

The style of the armor was extremely old, not belonging to any civilization he knew of. He wondered if some poor fool from a forgotten dynasty had somehow stumbled into this place.

[Brother Coffin doesn't have a sliver of fear, he's just full of curiosity.]

[Li Yan: This is super tricky. Chen Guan: Let me get a closer look!]

[Our Guan Guan is just unbelievably bold.]

The bullet comments were as entertaining as ever, contributing exactly zero useful information.

"Heh heh, kid, this pile of rags... I swear I've seen it somewhere before."

Baal's voice echoed in his mind, carrying a hint of uncertainty.

"It's so familiar, but I just can't place it. Maybe some idiot wearing this came to pick a fight with me back then, and I swatted him dead without even thinking about it."

Baal quickly lost interest. To Him, anything not worth remembering was unimportant by default.

Baal had seen far too many people and events across the eons, so much that nearly everything looked vaguely familiar to Him, and He simply did not bother to dwell on any of it.

Chen Guan, however, did not dismiss that piece of information.

Anything that could strike Baal as familiar was definitely no trivial matter.

That only stoked his urge to test things out even more.

He turned to look at Li Yan and said, "Master, I want to give it a try."

After coming all this way, there was no turning back now.

Li Yan did not try to stop him. It would have been far weirder if Chen Guan had just turned around and left without a second thought.

"Go ahead if you want. Just be careful. His power is only at the peak of the eighth tier, but his attacks are very strange and unpredictable."

He stepped back, leaving the entire platform to Chen Guan.

This student of his had so many secrets hidden away, so many that Li Yan had long grown used to it, and was even starting to look forward to what new surprise Chen Guan would pull off this time.

Who knew, maybe he could actually find a way to kill this weird King of the Tower for good.

Chen Guan rolled his wrists, deciding to start with a psychic attack first.

He stepped forward, walking unhurriedly toward the throne at the center of the platform.

As Chen Guan drew closer, the figure on the throne finally reacted.

The head hidden under the smooth visor lifted, and a will locked onto him across the space between them.

Chen Guan halted his steps.

He could feel his own psychic power turn as sluggish as if it had been slathered in wet cement.

This guy looked like a pure physical fighter, but his psychic strength was surprisingly high.

The next second, the figure on the throne stood up.

He held no weapon in his hands, just raised his black-armored hand and spread his five fingers wide.

In an instant, the air all around Chen Guan solidified. A crushing pressure surged in from every direction, trying to grind every bone in his body to dust.

This guy's psychic power was far stronger than any of the previous guardians he had fought.

"Not bad at all."

Chen Guan murmured to himself. Since their psychic clash was leaving him suppressed, he would break the deadlock with pure, unadulterated force.

In the next moment, bright crimson flames burst forth from his palm, and soon the fire was blazing all around his body.

Raging Flame.

A wisp of crimson fire, condensed to its absolute peak, sliced through the air. The purple river of stars above the platform was instantly dyed a blood-red hue, and the searing heat wave washed over everything—even Li Yan, standing at the edge of the platform, felt stinging pricks on his skin.

Faced with this devastating attack, the King of the Tower lifted his other hand. A pitch-black beam that swallowed all light shot out from the palm of his armor, colliding head-on with the crimson fire.

There was no earth-shattering explosion as anyone would have expected. The two attacks erased each other silently mid-air, leaving only a twisting, unstable spatial void in their wake that frantically swallowed every ray of light nearby.

After a moment, the void healed, and the sky above the platform returned to calm.

The King of the Tower still stood there perfectly still, his armor glinting with a cold, eerie luster under the starlight, not a single scratch on it.

Chen Guan's eyelid twitched.

Wait a second, the King of the Tower was standing on the left side in their beam clash, and he didn't lose?

Even by any reasonable standard, that full-powered Raging Flame of his would leave any ordinary eighth-tier fighter badly injured if it hit them head on, but this guy had neutralized it so effortlessly.

"Alright, then."

Chen Guan accepted that fact. He flipped his wrist, and a huge, pitch-black scythe appeared in his grasp.

Since he couldn't gain an upper hand with ranged magical clashes, he would settle this with the edge of his blade.

The words had barely faded when his figure turned into a black streak, cracking the smooth crystal floor under his feet as he charged straight at the King of the Tower in the center of the platform.

The King of the Tower shifted his body slightly to the side.

The sharp edge of the scythe, carrying the residual heat of the Raging Flame, sliced right past his shoulder armor.

Clang.

A harsh, sharp screech of metal on metal exploded, and sparks flew everywhere.

That ancient suit of armor had actually taken this earth-splitting blow head-on, leaving nothing but a bright white scratch on its surface.

Chen Guan's gaze turned sharp. He twisted his wrist, making the scythe trace a tricky arc as it curved around to hook at the King of the Tower's neck.

The moment the scythe's edge made contact with the armor, a voice was driven straight into the deepest part of his mind.

"You have finally come."

Some officials even had the audacity to suggest the emperor release funds from the imperial privy purse to address the emergency. Wang Hao suddenly felt weary. Let it all burn.
