“That’s it, that’s it—scatter, everyone back to your own homes! Keep an eye on your mounts, your attendants, and whatever belts or cloaks you’ve got on you!” Tai Bai Jin Xing hollered, and the celestial immortals of heaven dispersed their separate ways.
Patriarch Bodhi shot Sun Wukong a glance. “Figure it out yourself!” And with that, he too took his leave.
Eight-Tails and Sha Wujing, who had just woken from unconsciousness, looked left and right. Wait—so many gods and Buddhas and that was it?
What in the world had just happened?
Suddenly, they both got bonked on the head at the same time.
“Great Sage?” Eight-Tails rubbed its head and looked up at that furry monkey face.
“You two gone stupid? Can you still move or not?” Sun Wukong looked at the two demons.
“Yes, yes—so, are we... continuing the pilgrimage?” Eight-Tails, covered in dust and soot, scrambled to its feet.
“Pilgrimage my ass—didn’t we already get the scriptures?”
“Huh? Where?” asked Sha Wujing.
Eight-Tails nudged it. “Shut it. The Great Sage says we got them, so we got them... but, Great Sage, what about the monk?”
Sun Wukong looked up at the sky—though not in the direction where Lingjizi had vanished.
“Him? He’s gone reincarnated.”
“Reincarnated?” Sha Wujing scratched its head.
“You wouldn’t get it even if I explained,” Eight-Tails patted it. “Great Sage, so where do we go now?”
“Home.” Sun Wukong turned and walked off, Golden Cudgel slung over his shoulder. “And while I’m at it, I’m sending all these fellows back too. Learn something decent, stop brawling with other demons over nothing!”
Most of those ordinary demons had just lost their leaders, and hearing the Great Sage say this, they nodded eagerly and then, without being told, hoisted the banner reading “Tripitaka” and fell in line behind him.
“Great Sage, you’re heading back to Flower-Fruit Mountain, right? I’ve heard you and the monk talk about it—how about me and this idiot come with you?” Eight-Tails hurried up beside him.
But Sun Wukong shook his head. “Me? I’m going back to Five-Finger Mountain.”
“Huh?” Eight-Tails was taken aback, but it didn’t dare press further. It just turned back and called to Sha Wujing, who was still staring at the sky. “Hey, Silly Fish! Move it!”
Sun Wukong glanced back. The two characters “Tripitaka” were reflected in his pupils.
“Think you two can keep that name alive?”
“Hard to say.”
“Silly Fish, shut it! Great Sage, no problem!”
Everything seemed to settle back into place. Eight-Tails somehow wound up with its own territory—from the Western Regions all the way to the Eastern lands, banners of Tripitaka were planted atop every mountain that had demons.
Compared to it, Sha Wujing was far more idle. It would even transform into human form and go into human cities to study how people lived. Eight-Tails found this exasperating but couldn’t be bothered to manage it.
Then one day, Sha Wujing came running back covered in blood. Eight-Tails thought something terrible had happened, but upon questioning, it turned out the human world had gone to war again. The mortal emperor had been killed by his own son, and the one who took the throne was arrogant, wasteful, and decadent, stirring up resentment across the land—so Sha Wujing had fled.
It said it had been press-ganged into the army, but the man leading it got his head chopped off by another squad, and it got so scared it ran away.
Eight-Tails didn’t quite know what to say to that, and could only let out a sigh.
Dynasties changed in the mortal realm.
The Tang King bid farewell to Master Tripitaka—Tang Sanzang—hoping he would fetch the true scriptures and return.
But when Tang Seng, following the Bodhisattva’s instructions, arrived at Five-Finger Mountain, he was a bit taken aback. A monkey was lounging idly at the mountain’s base, basking in the sun, nibbling contentedly on a peach.
Seeing Tang Sanzang arrive, Sun Wukong tossed the peach away and strode over: “Going for the scriptures, right? Hurry up, hurry up—let’s go, let’s go.”
“Huh? This humble monk...”
“You’re called Tang Sanzang. I know.”
“This humble monk...”
“I’m Sun Wukong. Call me whatever you like, as long as I answer to it.”
“Um...”
“Come on, I’m in a hurry.”
Tang Seng was dragged off by Sun Wukong.
......
“Elder Brother, bad news—Master’s been captured by demons!” Sha Wujing hurried over, shouting.
Sun Wukong rolled his eyes at him. “Which demon took him?”
“Didn’t get a clear look, but the demon’s banner had the words ‘Tripitaka’ on it.”
“Whoa, these demons must be our master’s followers or something?” Zhu Bajie grinned ear to ear.
Sun Wukong shrugged. “Then no worries. We can save him later.”
“Elder Brother, what if Master...”
“Relax, it’s fine.”
By dusk, Sha Wujing watched as his elder brother stood with hands on his hips outside the demon’s cave, cursing up a storm, before both sides traded insults and then threw down.
But something about this fight felt... off.
“Watch me, ol’ Sun, attack your lower half!”
“I block!”
“Next: your head!”
“I dodge!”
“A strike to the chest!”
“Ouch! Great Sage, spare me! You’re too powerful... Boys! Let Tang Seng out right now!”
Zhu Bajie, who hadn’t stopped snacking, chewing on a fruit all the while, chuckled: “Old Sha, you catch that?”
Sha Wujing shook his head.
“Doesn’t matter if you didn’t. We’re all just here to go through the motions anyway... But this monkey’s got something going on. He had everything prepared ahead of time.”
“Second Brother, what are you talking about? Elder Brother, he...”
“Forget it, explaining it to you is hopeless. When the big bosses up top have already cut a deal, you think they’re going to let some trivial little thing ruin it?”
Sha Wujing was completely lost.
Only when he walked into the cave and saw Tang Seng seated cross-legged, preaching sutras to a circle of tiny demons sitting around him, did Sha Wujing’s worldview start to crack.
When Sun Wukong urged Tang Seng to get a move on, Tang Seng sounded almost reluctant to leave.
This journey to fetch the scriptures went by incredibly fast. Even Tang Seng grew accustomed to being kidnapped out of nowhere—he knew Wukong would arrive soon enough. He didn’t understand why, but it wasn’t so bad.
At least the demons treated him with great respect, calling him “boss” left and right, and they listened to his sermons with remarkable earnestness.
To bring so many disciples to the Buddha—that counted as a meritorious deed.
“Great Sage, you heard the news?” The moment they reached the former territory of the Lion Camel Ridge—which was now run by Eight-Tails, no, the Nine-Tailed Old Fox now—she had someone carry Tang Seng off to tie him up and make him preach, then pulled Sun Wukong aside.
“What news?”
“You might fool everyone else, but not me. I’m a crafty one.” The Nine-Tailed Old Fox was gleeful. “That one out there isn’t the real Tripitaka. Because the real Tripitaka... he’s been reincarnated.”
Sun Wukong was a bit surprised. “How do you know?”
The Nine-Tailed Old Fox was overjoyed at itself. “We’ve got a spy up at Lingshan—that White Rat, the one who used to steal lamp oil—overheard it. The monk crashed into the Heavenly Demon. Everyone thought he died with it in a mutual destruction, but he didn’t. He reincarnated.”
“Oh?” Sun Wukong eyed her. This fox still had no idea that the monk had, during that battle, already exchanged places with another.
“I heard he’s pretty rebellious. His dharma name is something like... Wutian, or something like that.”
“Wutian? That name’s even more arrogant than mine.”
“Don’t let the name fool you. The man does good deeds all day long.”
“What kind of good deeds?”
“He specializes in preaching to villains—and if they won’t listen, he beats them until they do.”
“... Isn’t that just a thug monk?”
