Seeking Immortality 037

“Huh?”

“Brother, you’re not going to wimp out and apologize now, are you?” Wang Kui couldn’t believe it.

Fang Zhiyi still looked relaxed. “I wiped out the Gao family… killed Xuan Jizi, then that old bald monk, and after that, I cut my way from south to north, from Qishui County all the way to Lai’an City… From south to north, I really wore myself out.”

“Is this your last words?”

“I’d planned to prepare a bit more thoroughly, but… I think I killed someone’s relative with connections…”

“Brother, what the hell are you talking about?” Wang Kui felt even more confused.

The few demons were puzzled too.

Suddenly, a crackling blast came from afar. Chi whipped its head toward the sound, its vertical pupils contracting sharply.

“So there are reinforcements? But my barrier won’t let them—” Before it could finish, an even louder explosion erupted, followed by shattering noises.

The barrier Chi had set up was broken.

“Who the hell are you?!” Chi turned and stared at Fang Zhiyi.

Fang Zhiyi didn’t answer. He simply raised a few fingers. “So many options. I told you I’ve killed plenty. Now name them all: First, a wastrel from a top-ranking minister’s family. Second, a royal relative who forced women into prostitution and committed murder. Third, a supervisor from the Imperial Astronomy Bureau who practiced forbidden sorcery behind its back.” With each name, the hearts of everyone present skipped a beat. This kid had quite a kill list.

“And fourth, an emperor obsessed with immortality.”

At those words, even Chi felt a chill—though it had no hair to stand on end.

“The correct answer is, all four.” Fang Zhiyi burst out laughing. “No wonder you didn’t know—the Imperial Astronomy Bureau covered it up pretty tightly.”

Just then, a flood of Imperial Astronomy Bureau agents came flying in.

“He’s here, and there are some transformed demons, too!”

Human cultivators and demons had always been in conflict, especially with the Imperial Astronomy Bureau.

“Major crime! He deserves death!” A Bureau agent clad entirely in armor plate didn’t bother with pleasantries. He shook his magical tool, and a burst of flame shot out.

The Fox was the first to understand. “They’ve mistaken us for his accomplices!”

Any explanations now were useless. The Bureau had been tracking Fang Zhiyi’s trail, and this time they had sent nearly their full force to take down the scourge.

Chaos erupted. Thunder and fire raged across the valley. Chi, massive and imposing, took several direct hits before it lost its composure again. It twisted its body and began a counterattack, shaking the entire valley.

“No, this… This… I…” Wang Kui gripped his short blade tightly, unsure what was happening. Those people kept flying around.

“Wang Kui, I’ve taken care of your matter. How about you do me a favor?” Fang Zhiyi turned to look at him.

Wang Kui froze. “I could, but you…”

In the middle of the exchange, several figures landed before them. Fang Zhiyi slowly turned his black sword.

Zhongli grinned as he saw him. “Wow, we meet again?”

Fang Zhiyi nodded.

“Kid… you’re a real freak. Damn shame.”

“Quit wasting words on him!” Zhou Lian suddenly shot forward, sword raised. “My uncle said killing him means we get to go back and claim the reward!”

“Hey?” Zhongli tried to stop him, then muttered, “Tch, this spoiled brat…”

Two other agents charged forward alongside Zhou Lian. Fang Zhiyi gave his black sword a light shudder. The blade suddenly began to quake violently. Countless black souls tore out from within, wailing so loudly they echoed across the valley.

With these vengeful spirits joining the fray, the battlefield grew even more chaotic.

Two of the agents following Zhou Lian were caught off guard. Black souls pierced straight through their chests. They hit the ground, convulsing.

“Evil practitioner! Surrender now or face divine retribution!” Zhou Lian unveiled a magical ward at his waist, one given by Grand Tutor Zhou for protection. The moment it appeared, the black souls dared not come near.

Zhou Lian beamed with smug confidence. “Thinking tricks like that can stand up to me?”

Zhongli muttered under his breath, “Show-off. Without his family backing him, he’d have been dead long ago.”

Zhao Yue pulled out a pair of judge’s brushes, waiting for his moment.

But Fang Zhiyi vanished. In the next instant, he appeared right before Zhou Lian.

“Evil practitioner! Do you even know who my uncle is?!”

“Normally, I wouldn’t care what you do, but you can’t come flaunting your attitude in front of me.” Fang Zhiyi flicked his sword. Zhou Lian felt his own blade yanked away by an uncanny force. His eyes went wide as he stared at the evil practitioner, who was even younger than him.

“Bodyguard talisman, huh? Your uncle, huh? Love to show off, huh? Double standards, huh?” Fang Zhiyi grabbed Zhou Lian by the collar with one hand and slapped him repeatedly with the other.

Zhou Lian struggled at first, but he quickly realized the evil practitioner’s physical skills were hundreds of times greater than his own.

“Justice is served.” Zhongli summed it up dryly. Even Zhao Yue silently nodded.

The other Imperial Astronomy Bureau agents who had arrived saw this scene and, by unspoken agreement, held back. Zhou Lian’s character was too obnoxious even in their eyes.

But satisfaction aside, they couldn’t just let Zhou Lian be beaten to death. Soon they moved. Several agents attacked Fang Zhiyi from different angles. Fang Zhiyi didn’t press his luck. He let go and retreated, using his black sword to deflect several strikes in succession.

One agent shook his Spirit-Calming Bell. A stream of black smoke surged toward Fang Zhiyi, but as it neared, it seemed to be absorbed.

“Idiot! He cultivates ghostly energy himself—what are you even doing?!”

On a hilltop, figures in hooded cloaks stood silent, observing the chaos below as if waiting for something. When a paper crane slowly spiraled down, the leader in a deep-red cloak nodded slightly, and the others scattered.

Wang Kui gripped his short blade, looking left and right, completely unsure who to hit.

The Fox was overwhelmed by dozens of agents. A cold, deadly iron chain was forced around its neck. As a burly agent roared and leaped down, its last tail was severed cleanly. The Fox let out a horrifying scream, its body crashing to the ground and shrinking back to the size of an ordinary fox.

The Porcupine was pinned down by a hundred iron needles. Several agents worked together, driving a huge cyan sword through its chest.

The Boar tried to flee but was blocked by a freakish figure—muscles bulging, the man grabbed its tusks and, with sheer raw strength, stopped its escape. The pursuing agents took the chance to strike.

Watching its allies fall one by one, Chi let out a thunderous roar. Its pupils turned bloodshot.

“Wretched humans! How dare you disturb this immortal’s cultivation!”

In an instant, its scales flared open. Purple mist gushed from pores across its body, making those Imperial Astronomy Bureau agents it contacted scream and recoil.

Chi looked around left and right before its eyes finally locked onto Fang Zhiyi, who was fighting while retreating step by step.

“Ant!!!”
