Ghost King 05

Fang Zhiyi sat cross-legged on the tombstone, staring straight at the two ghostly officials. His unblinking gaze made one of them turn toward him.

The two ghosts faced each other in silence.

"Get to the back of the line," the ghost official said in a hoarse, emotionless voice.

Fang Zhiyi shook his head. "Not lining up."

The ghost official seemed to hesitate for a moment, then suddenly reached out toward Fang Zhiyi.

Fang Zhiyi also hesitated. What does this mean?

Seeing that Fang Zhiyi made no move, a chain slid from the official's sleeve, clattering loudly.

Fang Zhiyi frowned. Finally going to fight? Good chance to test the mettle of this world's ghost officials.

But suddenly, a hand appeared in front of him. Liu Sandao, who had been hiding, stepped forward with a fawning grin. "Ghost official, sir, he just died—doesn't know the ropes, doesn't know the ropes." As he spoke, he pulled a few yellow paper banknotes from his own pocket and shoved them into the ghost official's hand.

The ghost official took them, slowly retracted the chain, and continued leading the ghosts forward.

"You—"

"You young fellow just won't listen! You've cost an old man his savings," Liu Sandao grumbled. "These fellows only care about money, not ghosts. You sit here staring, and you think they'll just let you off?"

Hearing Liu Sandao's complaints, Fang Zhiyi felt a bit embarrassed.

"I'll pay you back later."

"Forget it. You've been dead for days, and no one's burned paper for you yet. I'd wager you're just like me—nobody gives a damn about you!" Liu Sandao kept muttering as the ghosts lining up for reincarnation filed slowly into the depths of the cemetery.

Fang Zhiyi thought it over and could understand. Even ghost officials took bribes. No wonder ghosts and monsters ran rampant in this world.

But what he didn't expect was that same night, a figure sneaked into the cemetery.

Liu Xiaohua, clutching a red cloth bundle, stumbled through the graveyard. She stopped every few steps to carefully study the names and photographs on the tombstones.

Fortunately, the ghost officials had already led the ghosts away, so at least no spirits followed her. But her arrival still disturbed a few reluctant souls who refused to leave.

They poked their heads out, watching the human girl with greedy eyes.

Fear was plain on Liu Xiaohua's face. The deeper she went, the more hesitant she became. When she bent down again to check a tombstone, a hand on her shoulder made her scream.

Even Fang Zhiyi was startled. "What? What?"

Liu Xiaohua spun around in panic, saw Fang Zhiyi's confused face, and relaxed a little.

"You—you—here, for you!" She thrust the red bundle at Fang Zhiyi.

Fang Zhiyi looked at the bundle, then back at Liu Xiaohua. "Are you crazy? How am I supposed to take it?"

Liu Xiaohua finally seemed to realize. She crouched down and opened the bundle, revealing a messy pile of paper ingots, spirit money, incense, candles, and the like.

Flustered, she took out a lighter and lit the paper money, then bowed devoutly toward Fang Zhiyi, murmuring something under her breath.

"Hurry up and take the money! Take the money!"

Fang Zhiyi was thoroughly speechless.

Liu Sandao, however, sidled over, glancing at Fang Zhiyi and then at the girl with some surprise. "Not bad—someone burning paper for you? Who is she? I noticed you were pretty protective of her that night."

Fang Zhiyi shot Liu Sandao a look. "Who? My creditor."

Liu Sandao looked baffled, but when he saw Fang Zhiyi grab the floating spirit money and stuff it into his own pocket, he grinned widely.

"Young man, you've got a future! A bright future!"

Liu Xiaohua finished burning the offerings and ran off without a word, as though fleeing from ghosts.

Fang Zhiyi watched her retreating figure meaningfully but said nothing.

Seven days later, the ghost officials returned. Fang Zhiyi spotted them from afar as they entered the cemetery from outside, already trailed by a procession of ghosts waiting for reincarnation.

One of the ghost officials looked up and saw the troublemaker from last time. Without a word, it walked straight up to Fang Zhiyi and extended its hand.

Fang Zhiyi curled his lip. Liu Sandao, reluctant and grumbling, pulled out some of the spirit money Fang Zhiyi had given him earlier from his pocket.

"Haven't even warmed my hands yet... And you—can't you just hide for once? Why do you have to sit right here and stare?"

Fang Zhiyi didn't look back. "Tell me how you warm up ghost money. Go on."

"Just a figure of speech," Liu Sandao said, wincing.

But this time, the ghost official examined the paper money, seemed unsatisfied, and muttered something. Liu Sandao froze, then turned to Fang Zhiyi. "It says it's not enough."

Fang Zhiyi stared at the ghost officer and suddenly shot back, "Not enough? You've got quite an appetite."

Liu Sandao was terrified. He quickly jumped in front of Fang Zhiyi, stammering to the official, "Sir, sir—he doesn't know what he's saying, he—" Before he could finish, Fang Zhiyi kicked the ghost official square in the chest.

"You—"

Not only Liu Sandao was stunned—every ghost present was petrified, except for the mindless wandering souls.

The other ghost official wasted no time. Its iron chain shot out like a viper toward Fang Zhiyi. But what would have been a fatal blow to any other ghost missed entirely—and Fang Zhiyi caught the chain with his bare hand.

The ghost official tried to pull it back, but couldn't budge it; instead, Fang Zhiyi yanked it forward, then slapped the official so hard it spun in place.

The kicked ghost official scrambled back to its feet. It had never imagined a ghost would dare attack him.

"How dare you!"

"You tell me," Fang Zhiyi snapped, dodging its attack, then grabbing it by the collar and proceeding to beat it senseless.

Liu Sandao stood frozen. He knew exactly how strong these ghost officials were; he'd seen a vengeful spirit torn apart by them before. But what was he witnessing now?

He watched Fang Zhiyi tie the two officials together with their own chains.

"You've stirred up a huge mess! You've stirred up a huge mess, you blind wandering soul!" the officials yelled.

Fang Zhiyi kicked them without hesitation, sending them sprawling to the ground. Then he crouched down, looking every bit the rogue. "I've stirred up a mess? You two shaking people down for bribes—that's not a big deal? What, nobody in the underworld can keep you in line?"

"You—!"

Another slap cut the official off. Fang Zhiyi jabbed a finger at its nose. "I'm giving you two choices. Either I kill you right now—and you both know full well I can."

The two ghost officials fell silent. They knew this mysterious ghost before them was far stronger than them.
