The Law of True Fragrance

Xu Mo's interrogation skills were top-notch, and Han Fei knew this well.

So, it didn’t surprise Han Fei that Xu Mo had managed to extract a confession from a deranged murderer in such a short time.

What truly puzzled Han Fei was how Xu Mo had managed to catch the killer in the first place.

After all, Xu Mo hadn’t even been to the crime scene, and when the police station received the report, Xu Mo wasn’t present.

Logically, Xu Mo shouldn’t have even known about the case at the time. Yet, out of nowhere, he had quietly pulled off a major feat by apprehending the killer single-handedly!

Glancing at Xu Mo in front of him and then at the confession in his hand, Han Fei couldn’t help but voice his doubts.

“I remember you weren’t at the station when we received the report, right?”

“Yeah,” Xu Mo nodded without denying it.

“Then how did you catch this guy?”

“I ran into him on the street. He looked shifty and didn’t seem like a good person. Plus, I noticed a faint smell of blood on him, which felt off. When I questioned him, he was evasive, so I just arrested him. When I got back to the station, I overheard Xiao Hu talking about a new murder case we’d just received. I suspected this guy might be involved, and sure enough, after questioning him, he confessed.”

Xu Mo gave a simple explanation, carefully omitting any mention of his “criminal radar.”

As an outstanding officer, relying on intuition to spot a bad guy in a crowd wasn’t far-fetched, right?

Having a keen sense of smell and picking up the scent of blood on a suspect wasn’t unreasonable, right?

Hearing about a murder case while he was away and connecting it to Wang Jianjun as the possible perpetrator wasn’t a stretch, right?

As for the interrogation, it went without saying—getting a deranged killer to confess his motives and methods in just over ten minutes was just another day in the life of Xu Mo.

At first glance, Xu Mo’s explanation seemed perfectly plausible.

But Han Fei still felt something was off. He couldn’t shake the feeling that things weren’t as simple as Xu Mo made them out to be.

From the moment the police station received the report to the killer’s arrest and the conclusion of the interrogation, less than an hour had passed.

This was almost too surreal—it had shattered the station’s record for the fastest case resolution.

In fact, this speed was unmatched nationwide.

Which police station could solve a murder case in under an hour?

Yet, according to Xu Mo, the case was resolved so quickly because he happened to spot a shifty-looking man who didn’t seem like a good person, and who also had the scent of blood on him. Coincidentally, this man turned out to be the killer in a murder case. It all seemed like a series of fortunate coincidences.

Han Fei felt there was something fishy about the whole situation, but he couldn’t pinpoint exactly what it was.

The reason Han Fei couldn’t find any flaws was that Xu Mo had been careful.

The confession Xu Mo provided was edited. The original dialogue between the two in the interrogation room hadn’t been recorded verbatim.

To make the confession and his own account align, Xu Mo deliberately omitted details like the victim’s identity—information he shouldn’t have known—and didn’t include them in the confession.

From the confession, Wang Jianjun came across as someone with weak nerves. Xu Mo had simply pressured him, and he’d cracked under the strain, confessing everything.

After hearing Xu Mo’s explanation, Han Fei only hesitated for a moment before letting it go.

The case was solved, and the killer was caught. That was all that mattered. How he was caught wasn’t important. Sure, the odds of randomly running into a shifty-looking person who just happened to be the killer in a murder case were slim, but it wasn’t impossible.

Coincidences happen all the time. Nothing unusual about that.

“You’ve successfully apprehended the killer. Reward obtained—Language Master (Upgraded Version).”

Language Master again? What does this upgraded version mean? Does this thing even have levels?

The system had previously given Xu Mo the Language Master reward, which allowed him to master all the languages and dialects of every country in the world, along with knowledge of their customs, culture, history, and local traditions.

This reward had been quite useful. Back when Xu Mo was in Sakura Country, he had even impersonated someone from Xiba Country and greeted a few Sakura locals in Xiba language, throwing some shade at Xiba Country in the process.

Without overthinking it, Xu Mo took a closer look at the description of the upgraded Language Master.

Language Master: The host can communicate with small animals and insects (usable once per day for ten minutes, with no limit on the number of communication targets).

Communicate with small animals and insects? What kind of reward is this? Why would I talk to animals? I’m not crazy.

This lousy reward even comes with restrictions—once a day, and only for ten minutes?

Ten minutes? Ha! I wouldn’t use it for a single minute. I, Xu Mo, would rather die, jump off a building, than talk to animals!

Five minutes later.

“Hey, you winged little jerk, I’m talking to you. Did you bite this bump on my hand? Come here, let me smack you.”

Mosquito: “???”

“What’s that? Oh, you’re a male mosquito? You don’t suck blood… My bad.”

“Tell your siblings to stay away from my blood. If they come near me, I’ll swat them dead. Go suck someone else’s blood… like that guy over there. Feel free to feast on him.” As Xu Mo spoke to the mosquito, he pointed through the glass at Han Fei outside the office.

A moment later, Han Fei, who was talking to another officer, irritably scratched his arm.

“It’s already autumn! Where are all these mosquitoes coming from? So annoying!”

In just that short time, he’d been bitten several times.

Xu Mo suddenly realized that the ability to communicate with small animals and insects was actually amazing!

I take back what I said earlier. This reward isn’t useless—it’s actually quite handy!

No, not just handy—it’s incredibly useful.

At first glance, this ability might seem pointless, but upon closer thought, it’s more powerful than any cheat code. It’s not just about warning mosquitoes to stay away from my blood. There are so many other applications.

If used correctly, it could even help solve cases!

After all, animals and insects are everywhere, and there are countless of them. Being able to talk to them means Xu Mo could potentially get leads on criminals from the small creatures at a crime scene.

If used well, this reward could be even more powerful than the police’s surveillance system. After all, there are far more animals and insects than there are security cameras.

Thinking this, Xu Mo felt a surge of excitement.

This is awesome!
