Fight Slimes

"Mo Lini, we might be about to get rich." Liyana suddenly spoke to Mo Lini, her green eyes sparkling.

"Huh?" Mo Lini blinked her big, adorable eyes.

"I've found a brilliant way to make a fortune, guaranteed to bring in lots of gold coins... Aren't you excited?"

Seeing that Mo Lini had no reaction, Liyana was a bit displeased and patted her on the shoulder. "You should act more excited."

"Oh... but what would we do with so much money? It seems pretty useless, doesn't it?" Mo Lini tilted her head.

Liyana was taken aback. Their daily expenses were mostly covered by Sharon and Aina, so money didn't seem all that necessary to them.

At most, they would go shopping for dresses... And that didn't cost much at all. Even Liyana's own finances would be more than enough.

"But... it's money! A heavy bag of gold coins—doesn't that get you excited?" Liyana waved her hands, continuing her passionate speech. "We're adventurers, risking our lives for gold..."

"Is it a legitimate method?" Luo Lun interjected at this point, looking at Liyana with suspicion.

"Of course it's legitimate! Completely legal and aboveboard! Just say the word, Mo Lini, and piles of gold coins will come pouring into our money pouch!" Liyana perked up, spreading her arms wide and making an exaggerated gesture as if gold coins were raining from the sky.

"Me?" Mo Lini tilted her head again. She really couldn't figure out what the money-making scheme Liyana was talking about had to do with her.

"Hehe... Follow me, and you'll find out."

Liyana led the two of them through a winding path until they eventually ducked into a remote, narrow alley.

The walls on both sides of the alley were covered in ivy, and the cobblestone road was uneven from age, with a few stubborn wildflowers and weeds growing in the cracks.

Deep in the alley, there was a small tavern. Its wooden door bore the marks of time, and the doorknob was polished shiny from use. A crooked sign hung nearby, the wood corroded and the lettering barely legible.

"Slime Tavern?" Mo Lini managed to make out the words from the weathered carvings.

"Lately, a new activity has become popular among adventurers—Slime Fights!" Liyana said enthusiastically to Mo Lini. "People catch slimes, raise them, and then compete to see whose slime is stronger... Little Lan is so powerful; no slime can beat it!"

"No, Liyana, you can't do that!" Mo Lini bristled like a cat whose tail had been stepped on. "You want to use Little Lan as a tool to make money? To make it fight its own kind? That's too cruel!"

Mo Lini instinctively took Little Lan down from the top of her head and hugged it protectively.

"Slimes have a natural instinct to devour each other. Getting stronger through fighting is good for Little Lan too..." Liyana didn't seem bothered at all. "Oh, but during the matches, they can't devour each other. The opponents' slimes are expensive to raise too... So don't worry, even if Little Lan loses, nothing bad will happen."

Mo Lini glared angrily at Liyana, clearly refusing to let Little Lan participate in such an activity no matter what she said.

"This is a great way to make money—easy and fast..." Liyana rubbed her fingers together, looking rather mercenary. "Afterwards, I'll treat you to all the desserts you can eat! Honey cake, strawberry tarts, cream puffs..."

Mo Lini swallowed, but she still shook her head firmly, hugging Little Lan even tighter.

"Luo Lun, please say something to Liyana." Knowing she couldn't handle Liyana's persistence, Mo Lini turned to Luo Lun for help.

Luo Lun glanced at Little Lan bouncing in Mo Lini's arms and said uncertainly, "I think... maybe you two should ask the little guy what it thinks?"

"Caw?" The blood bat on Luo Lun's shoulder let out an odd screech, poking its face out as if to show agreement.

"Bloop bloop bloop—" Little Lan bounced happily in Mo Lini's arms.

Mo Lini froze for a moment.

Little Lan's opinion?

She hadn't thought of that. She had simply assumed she was acting in Little Lan's best interests, without considering its own feelings.

"Little Lan... do you want to go to that activity Liyana was talking about?" Mo Lini gently stroked Little Lan's cool, soft surface.

Little Lan wobbled slightly, appearing to nod its round head... since that was pretty much all it had.

"Haha! See, Little Lan agrees! It's so sensible." Liyana immediately got excited, grabbing Little Lan from Mo Lini's hands and holding it up high. "Go get 'em! Beat all your opponents flat! Let's make a fortune together!"

Surprisingly, Little Lan didn't fuss with Liyana. Instead, it hopped onto her shoulder, and the sight of them gave the impression of two buddies slinging arms over each other's shoulders.

Mo Lini pressed her lips together, but since this was Little Lan's own decision, she felt she shouldn't say more.

Liyana headed into the tavern with Little Lan.

"Did you know, little guy? This tavern has been called that name for a long time... Of course, they don't use slimes to make alcohol. They used to keep a bunch of slimes as decorations in the place. At first, it attracted a lot of noble ladies and wives to come and admire them." Liyana chuckled as she told Little Lan the tavern's history.

"Bloop bloop bloop—" Little Lan responded a couple of times, though who knew what it said, its round body faintly glowing on Liyana's shoulder.

"But after a while, the tavern gradually declined. Without any new gimmicks—once people got bored of just slimes—it fell out of fashion... Until recently, when the slime-fighting craze swept through, it became popular again." Liyana sighed thoughtfully.

"How do you know all this, Liyana?" Mo Lini asked.

"Haha, because I came here before, of course. That must have been about fifty or sixty years ago... It doesn't feel that long ago, actually." Liyana twitched her long, pointed ears and grinned.

Mo Lini was silent for a moment.

She had the strange feeling that beneath Liyana's cheerful smile, there was something not quite as happy as it seemed... Hidden deep in those always-sparkling eyes was a trace of loneliness and nostalgia, belonging to a long-lived race.

"Little Lan! Let's go! Today, we're going to turn one gold coin into Olifanto's richest tycoon!"

"Bloop bloop bloop—"

Liyana had great confidence in Little Lan's strength. No matter how strong an ordinary slime was, it would be held back by its race—it could only go so far. But Little Lan was different...

At least, Liyana had never heard of any slime possessing power at the intermediate level.

The tavern door creaked open a crack, spilling out warm light and the clamor of voices. Liyana strode in with a triumphant air.
